Colon cancer patients who were heavy coffee drinkers had a far lower risk of dying or having their cancer return than those who did not drink coffee, with significant benefits starting at two to three cups a day, a new study found. Patients who drank four cups of caffeinated coffee or more a day had half the rate of recurrence or death than noncoffee drinkers. But, the researchers caution, cancer patients should not start ordering extra tall coffees. The study, the first to report such findings, does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship between coffee drinking and a lower risk of colon cancer recurrence. As other experts note, there may be differences between heavy coffee drinkers and abstainers that the research was not able to account for. In recent years, many studies have pointed to coffee’s health benefits, suggesting coffee may protect against Type 2 diabetes, reduce overall deaths and perhaps even help protect against dementia. Other studies have suggested coffee may reduce the risks of certain cancers, including colon cancer. The benefits are generally attributed to coffee’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But as with many studies about diet, proving a link between coffee consumption and protection against cancer recurrence is difficult. “Think about it: People who drink a lot of coffee tend to be high stress, high pressure, intense and compulsive,” said Dr. Alfred Neugut, a professor of cancer research, medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University and a director of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Cancer Prevention Center. “If they have cancer, they’re going to be more obsessive about following all the rules and doing all the things they’re supposed to do. So it may be that coffee itself is playing a physiological role, but it may also be a surrogate marker for you being a compulsive health-conscious good behaver.”“想想看:大量喝咖啡的人往往压力比较大、容易紧张或有强迫倾向,”美国哥伦比亚大学(Columbia University)的癌症研究、医学和流行病学教授,纽约长老会医院(NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital)癌症防治中心(Cancer Prevention Center)的主任艾尔弗雷德·纽各特(Alfred Neugut)士说。 Dr. Charles S. Fuchs, the director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, who led the research, acknowledged the limitations of his study and called for interventional studies to replicate and confirm the findings. “No one has ever done this before in colon cancer patients. It does require confirmation,” he said. Patients should not start drinking coffee based on this study, but, “If you’re a coffee drinker and enjoy your coffee, stick with it,” he said. “If a patient says, ‘Well I hate coffee,’ I’d say there are other things you can do, like avoid obesity, exercise regularly and follow a balanced diet.” The study, published Monday in The Journal of Clinical Oncology, followed 953 patients with Stage 3 colon cancer who had been treated with surgery and chemotherapy. The patients, recruited from 1999 to 2001, were asked to fill out detailed dietary pattern questionnaires about food intake and lifestyle, first during chemotherapy and again six months later. The questionnaires asked about their intake of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee, herbal and nonherbal tea, caffeinated soft drinks and chocolate. The researchers adjusted the findings to control for differences such as gender, age, smoking, diet, caloric intake, consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and alcohol, weight and physical activity. They did not, however, adjust for use of aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, even though their earlier work suggests such drugs may be protective against colon cancer recurrence. Dr. Fuchs said their previous research had not shown any association between coffee drinking and aspirin use. They determined that patients who had reported drinking four or more cups of caffeinated coffee a day were 52 percent less likely to have had a recurrence of cancer or to have died than those who had never drank coffee, while those who drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day were 31 percent less likely than nondrinkers to have had a recurrence or to have died. Sweetened coffee beverages did not count. The researchers’ hypothesis is that the factors that increase risk for Type 2 diabetes, such as obesity, a sedentary lifestyle and high insulin levels, also drive colon cancer, Dr. Fuchs said. And many studies have shown that coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk for Type 2 diabetes, a chronic illness that may increase the risk of colon cancer. “We believe that activating the energy pathways that contribute to heart disease and diabetes is also relevant for the proliferation of cancer cells,” Dr. Fuchs said, while also stressing that more research was needed. The analysis determined the lowered risk associated with coffee was entirely because of the caffeine. One hypothesis is that caffeine increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin, so it requires less of the hormone. That, in turn, may reduce inflammation, which is a risk factor for diabetes and cancer. While there are inevitably gaps in these kinds of studies, the new research is “one piece of a big puzzle,” said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the deputy chief medical officer at the American Cancer Society, adding that there is tremendous concern about the role obesity and metabolic factors may play in promoting cancer. “This is an example of trying to look at those types of questions — about what the metabolic relationships are, and what might influence those metabolic relationships — in a positive way.”“这是人们试图以积极的方式,探讨代谢关系、以及这些代谢关系可能造成的影响等问题的一个范例。” /201510/403299

The Republic of China中华民国Early Republic民国初期On January 1, 1912, Sun officially declared the Republic of China and was inaugurated in Nanjing as the first provisional president.1912年1月1日,孙中山正是宣布中华民国成立,并在南京就职第一任临时大总统。But power in Beijing aly had passed to the Commander-in-Chief of the imperial army and Qing prime minister, Yuan Shikai, the strongest regional military leader at the time. To prevent civil war and possible foreign intervention from undermining the infant republic, agreed to Yuar’s demand that China be united under a Beijing government headed by Yuan. On February 12, 1912, the last Manchu emperor, the child Puyi, abdicated.1912年2月12日,末代皇帝溥仪退位。On March 10, in Beijing, Yuan Shikai was sworn in as the second provisional president of the Republic of China.3月10日,袁世凯在北京宣誓就任中华民国第二任临时大总统。The republic that Sun Yat-sen and his associates envisioned evolved slowly. The revolutionists lacked an army, and the power of Yuan Shikai began to outstrip that of parliament. Yuan reused the constitution at will and became dictatorial. In August 1912 the Kuomintang (KMT, Nationalist Party) was founded by Song Jiaoren, one of Sun’s associates.1912年8月,孙中山的同仁宋教仁成立了国民党。It was an amalgamation of small political groups, including Sun’s Tongmeng Hui. In the national elections held in February 1913 for the new bicameral parliament, Song campaigned against the Yuan administration, and his party won a majority of seats. Yuan had Song assassinated in March; he had aly arranged the assassination of several pro-revolutionist generals. Animosity toward Yuan grew. In the summer of 1913 seven southern provinces rebelled against Yuan. When the rebellion was suppressed, Sun and other instigators fled to Japan. In October 1913 an intimidated parliament formally elected Yuan president of the Republic of China, and the major powers extended recognition to his government.1913年10月,袁世凯恐吓议会,当选共和国大总统,主要权利由议会转移到他的政府。To achieve international recognition, Yuan Shikai had to agree to autonomy for Outer Mongolia and Tibet. China was still to be suzerain, but it would have to allow Russia a free hand in Outer Mongolia and mongolia and Britain continuance of its influence in Tibet. In November Yuan Shikai, legally president, ordered the KMT dissolved and its members removed from parliament.11月,总统袁世凯下令解散国民党,将其成员踢出议会。Within a few months, he suspended parliament and the provincial assemblies and forced the promulgation of a new constitution, which, in effect, made him president for life. By the end of 1915, Yuan declared himself emperor.1915年底,袁世凯称帝。Widesp rebellions ensued, and numerous provinces declared independence. With opposition at every quarter and the nation breaking up into warlord factions, Yuan Shikai died of natural causes in June 1916, deserted by his lieutenants. /201512/412293。

PARIS — The last thing the food universe seems to need these days is another restaurant guide. But the glut of guides hasn’t stopped France’s Foreign Ministry from compiling La Liste, an ambitious ranking of what it claims are the 1,000 best “tables of exception” in the world. La Liste is based on an algorithm named Ciacco, the nickname of Dante’s gluttonous friend in “The Inferno,” and invented by Antoine Ribaut, a French-American computer systems architect. He drew on data from sources that included 200 food guides in 92 countries, such as Michelin, Gault amp; Millau and Zagat, and crowd-sourced sites like TripAdvisor and OpenTable. A committee of experts, among them Jean-Robert Pitte, a French food and wine historian and geographer, and the German food journalist Zipprick, defined the criteria, including the quality of food, ambience, wine and spirits lists and service. The cost of the initiative, about 300,000 euros (9,000), was paid not with government money but by a dozen corporate sponsors led by Nestlé and Mo琀 Hennessy. La Liste will be unveiled formally by Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius at a ceremony honoring many of the chefs at the Quai d’Orsay on Dec. 17. There are restaurants from 48 countries, with 126 in Japan, 118 in France and 101 in the ed States. China has 69 restaurants on the list, 43 of them on the mainland; Spain, Germany and Italy each have more than 50. /201512/417100With no natural predators — and no human beings to worry about — Grassholm should be a paradise for Britain#39;s greatest seabird, the gannet. After all, this bleak slab of rock eight miles off Pembrokeshire is run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) as a sanctuary. Instead, for many of these creatures, it has become a graveyard, as they are trapped or strangled by tons of discarded plastic chucked into the North Atlantic. And now a rescue mission has captured the extent of the problem with this powerful but disturbing set of photographs. They show how old nets, waste and packaging thrown overboard by fishing boats and cargo ships is carried ashore by the gannets. They mistake the rubbish for seaweed and use it to line their nests — with disastrous and tragic results. Birds have even torn off their own feet just to escape from the tangle. It is estimated that there are 18 tons of plastic detritus on Grassholm. The gannet is an extraordinary bird. With a 6ft wingspan, it weighs around 7lb and can dive-bombing the ocean at up to 60mph in search of mackerel and herring. The RSPB typically saves the lives of 50 birds each year. Greg Morgan, the RSPB#39;s warden of Grassholm and neighbouring Ramsey Island, says: #39;Some are too badly injured to help and some have died. People ask why we don#39;t clear the rubbish. But you#39;d have to wipe out the nests and start again, which would cause major disruption to the birds. #39;It is not going to solve the problem. They only way to do that is to raise awareness and to stop the plastic ending up in the sea.#39;“我们无法解决这个问题,我们能做的就是希望唤更多人的意识,不要向海洋中扔塑料垃圾。” /201601/421790

First LPs and record players made a comeback – now the cassette tape is rewinding back into our lives. Music fans on both sides of the Atlantic are returning to the cassette two decades after they were replaced by the CD, and more recently digital downloads. This nostalgia for the old format comes despite the frustrations that led to their decline, including their tendency to become scrambled and jammed in players. Sales of music tapes are rising so quickly in the US that the Recording Industry Association of America, the trade body for music labels which also certifies gold and platinum records, is investigating ways to track sales for the first time since the early 1990s. It is thought the revival was started by underground music acts. But now, more mainstream musicians have started producing albums on cassette again. British singer Marina and the Diamonds released her last album, Froot, on cassette late last year. Albums from top US stars are also available on cassette, including Justin Bieber#39;s latest release, Purpose, and Kanye West#39;s Yeezus. They are being sold at fashion chains such as Urban Outfitters, as well as being available online. Meanwhile Hypnohouse Trax, a British dance music label, has put out a collection of its own on tape. Sales of cassettes in the UK could follow the path of vinyl record sales – which fell to a low of just over 205,000 in 2007, but have grown every year since and hit a 20-year high of 2.1million in 2015. The Oxford English Dictionary dropped #39;cassette player#39; from its concise edition in 2011.
