I’m Jody. Welcome to American Cafe! J: It is a very moving story about two characters: Ann Jones, from Washington D.C. and her friend, Bella. Bella. J: Now, I think it’s important to tell people that Bella is a dolphin. J: Well, it started about four years ago and recently Ann made a trip to see her old friend. Now, it’s my pleasure to introduce Ann Jones as she explains the purpose of this special reunion trip. 实录1: ANNIE: I’m Ann Jones and I’m from Washington D.C. in the ed States, the capital. The purpose of the trip was to go back and swim again with a dolphin that helped save my life almost four years ago. It was wonderful. It was very emotional. I cried a lot. I don’t know if dolphins cry or not but she was ... she was just so excited. J: It’s a wonderful story. And it starts with the fact that a dolphin is very sensitive and can see everything in your body with their sonar. J: And also when given a choice between a sick or well person, a dolphin will swim with a sick person. Again here’s Ann. 实录2: ANNIE: The dolphin’s very sensitive and, um, they can see everything in your body. And they know if you’re sick or if you’re well. And almost four years ago the one dolphin, Bella, swan with me all the time to let me know — she was protecting me — that I was sick. J: That’s right. J: Oh, of course. For years she complained to her doctor about a pain in her chest. And the doctor kept telling her to go home. 实录3: ANNIE: Before I went to swim with the dolphin, I went to a doctor and he told me I was well. I kept telling him I had a pain in my chest. And the doctor kept saying go home. And this went on year after year. J: Can you believe it? That’s why Ann turned to the dolphin. When she came back from swimming with Bella on the first trip, she immediately had — what she calls a medical miracle — a body scan. J: The body scan revealed that Ann had a cancerous tumor in her lung the size of an egg. 实录4: ANNIE: And it was the dolphin that tried to tell me that something was wrong. When I came back I had one of these new medical miracles called a body scan and there was this tumor, large as an egg, sitting in my lung. And I would’ve died within possibly six months and Bella the dolphin helped save my life. J: Well, I think we should hear that straight from Ann. 实录5: ANNIE: I’m doing great! I’ve passed all my cancer tests and I go for tests every three months. And I’m doing great. And I think I may make it forever! (laughter) So, that’s it. Thanks to Bella the dolphin! J: Isn’t that great! Ann has passed all her cancer tests! I’ll tell you what, she is one tough cookie. J: And don’t forget, a big “Thank You!” goes out to Bella the dolphin. And thanks to all of you for joining us on American Cafe! /200808/45780Tianjin Goubuli Group Corporation has submitted an application to the State Administration of Industry and Commerce to register "Go Believe" as its English brand.A Tianjin citizen came up with "Go Believe," and the name has received high praise from an expert evaluation group.By law, brand registration follows the principle of "application first." For similar products, after receiving the application, the trademark office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce would then check whether applications for the same or similar brands aly exist. The Tianjin Goubuli Group submitted its application for the "Go Believe" brand to the trademarkoffice at the first chance available. But because newspapers had published the name a few days before, whether or not the brand registration will be successful remains to be seen. The president of Tianjin Goubuli Group Corporation, Zhan Yansen, told reporters that since the pronunciation of "Go Believe" is quite similar to its original Chinese name, and the meaning is also in accordance with the honesty the group, it is very suitable for this hundred–year-old brand.前一阵子听说京城老字号敲定了洋名,6家老字号新的“洋名”是:全聚德 Quanjude Peking Roast Duck-Since 1864;吴裕泰Wuyutai Tea Shop-Since 1887;同仁堂 Tongrentang Chinese Medicine-Since 1669;瑞蚨祥Ruifuxiang Silk-Since 1862;荣宝斋Rongbaozhai Art Gallery-Since 1672;王致和Wangzhihe Gourmet Food-Since 1669。 /200802/26472

How might you drag a good writer's work down to the level of a lesser scribe? Try the spell-check button.A study at the University of Pittsburgh indicates spell-check software may level the playing field between people with differing levels of language skills, hampering the work of writers and editors who place too much trust in the software. In the study, 33 undergraduate students were asked to proof a one-page business letter half of them using Microsoft Word with its squiggly red and green lines underlining potential errors. The other half did it the old-fashioned way, using only their heads.Without grammar or spelling software, students with higher SAT verbal scores made, on average, five errors, compared with 12.3 errors for students with lower scores. Using the software, students with higher verbal scores ing the same page made, on average, 16 errors, compared with 17 errors for students with lower scores.Dennis Galletta, a professor of information systems at the Katz Business School, said spell-checking software is so sophisticated that some have come to trust it too thoroughly. "It's not a software problem, it's a behavior problem," he said.Microsoft technical specialist Tim Pash said grammar and spelling technology is meant to help writers and editors, not solve all their problems. The study found the software helped students find and correct errors in the letter, but in some cases they also changed phrases or sentences flagged by the software as grammatically suspicious, even though they were correct. /200812/58753Names amp; Titles 美式的名字与称谓 "What's in a name?" According to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, not too much. "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." But Shakespeare may have been wrong. In most cultures, names and titles matter a great deal. Americans choose names for their children with care. Parents usually think about the impression a name gives, not its meaning. Most Americans would consider a "Jennifer" more attractive than a "Bertha," for example. The last name, or surname, must also be considered when choosing a first and middle name. A name like Lester Chester Hester would sound poetic, but odd. Parents may avoid names that remind them of people they don't like. On the other hand, people might name their children after a respected older relative or even a famous person. The popularity of certain names can change with each new generation. Names that were once common, like Fanny or Elmer, sound old-fashioned today. But other names-like John and David, Mary and Sarah-have stood the test of time and continue to be favorites. People in America don't always call their friends and relatives by their given names. Instead, they often use nicknames. Sometimes nicknames are short forms of a longer name. For instance, a girl named Elizabeth may be called Lisa, Beth or Betsy. As children grow up, they may decide for themselves which nickname they wish to be called. If they consider their nickname childish, they may start using a more adult form. Some people just go by the initials of their first and middle names, like B.J. or R.C. And of course, people may call their children or their sweethearts other special nicknames. Often they have a "sweet" flavor, like Honey or Sugar. 或R.C.。 Sugar。 In informal settings, people are normally on a first-name basis. Sometimes older folks even allow young people to call them by their first name. But in most formal situations, people use an appropriate title-such as Mr. (Mister), Ms. ("Miz"), Dr. (doctor) or Prof. (professor)-with a person's last name. After an introduction, the person may say, for example, "Please call me Tom." If not, use his or her surname. Americans still use a few very formal titles which reflect their Old World heritage. The British address their king and queen as Your Majesty; Americans address the judge in a court as Your Honor. Americans speaking to their nation's leader respectfully call him Mr. President. And many churches refer to their leader as Reverend. In everyday situations, the polite forms sir and madam (or ma'am) show a measure of respect. But Americans don't generally use the names of occupations or positions as formal titles. Students might address their teacher as Mr. (or Ms.) Hudson, but not Teacher Hudson. What's in a name? A world of significance. So if you're choosing an English name for yourself, take care to choose a good one. A made-up name could sound strange to native English speakers. And a translation of your Chinese name may not make an appropriate name, either. But a good name can leave a positive and lasting impression. As an American politician once remarked, "In real life, unlike in Shakespeare, the sweetness of the rose depends upon the name it bears." /200803/32554At the start of the freshman year, finding a job after graduation isprobably the last thing on your mind, but before you know it, it willbe senior year and finding that job will be your top priority. Step one:Plant yourself deep in a bed of faith, and pack it down solid and tight. Drench daily with positive thinking, and keep saturated just right. Mulch often with forgivenss, for this will help you grow. Quickly remove any seeds of worry, for they will soon germinate, and keep out the weeds of despair. Nourish disappointments with hope whenever it is neeeded, and always stay cool and shaded when you feel irritated or heated. Trim away guilt or depression, for they create decay, and cultivate with happy memories as often as every day. Step two:Harvest the lessons of the past; just dig, pick, and hoe. And nurture the roots of the present, for now is when you flourish and grow. Start planting for the future; set your goals in a row. Spade the bed well for all your dreams to grow. Step three:Remember that grief is a natural predator, so learn to tolerate some damage. Protect your garden with daily prayers, for this will help you manage. Bury the criticism and complaining, for they are injurious pests. Sow the seed of love wherever you may go--for joy, love, and laughter are surely bound to grow. Although the thorns of life may be here to stay, just sprout a smile along the way...and be thankful for what you have today! /201108/147138It is research that is guaranteed to delight men - and infuriate the women in their lives. A controversial new study has claimed that men really are more intelligent than women. The study concluded that men's IQs are almost four points higher than women's. British-born researcher John Philippe Rushton, who previously created a furore by suggesting intelligence is influenced by race, says the finding could explain why so few women make it to the top in the workplace. He claims the 'glass ceiling' phenomenon is probably due to inferior intelligence, rather than discrimination or lack of opportunity. The University of Western Ontario psychologist reached his conclusion after scrutinizing the results of university aptitude tests taken by 100,000 students aged 17 and 18 of both sexes. A focus on a factors such as the ability to quickly grasp a complex concept, verbal reasoning skills and creativity - some of the key ingredients of intelligence - revealed the male teenagers had IQs that were an average of 3.63 points higher. The average person has an IQ of around 100. The findings, which held true for all classes and levels of parental education, overturn a 100 year consensus that men and women average the same in general mental ability. They also conflict with evidence that girls do better in school exams than boys. But Prof Rushton, who was born in Bournemouth and obtained his doctorate in social psychology from the London School of Economics, argues that the faster maturing of girls leads to them outshining boys in the classroom. /200808/464271. A school has brought in a masseuse to calm stressed pupils preparing for GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and boost their performance in the exams. The 30-minute sessions are being offered to 15 and 16-yearolds who are considered at risk of missing out on good grades.Twenty-five have had regular back massages from professional therapist Karen Etchells since the scheme was introduced three months ago at Priory Community School in Westonsuper-Mare, Somerset. The first massage is free, but pupils must pay £5 a time after that for the sessionswhich take place once a week on a Friday.Headmaster Neville Coles said they had proved particularly popular among the boys--especially the rugby team.He hopes the initiative will give GCSE results a lift."This is a high-pressure time for Year 11 students," Mr Coles said. "They work extremely hard and do get stressed. We have basically employed a masseuse to come in for a day. It is a mechanism to de-stress the kids and improve their exam results. ""At a time when we are constantly encouraging our Year 11 students to be at their very best and revise for their GCSEs we also want to provide relaxation activities. Massage is just one of these."Mr Coles said 32 per cent of pupils scored five GCSEs at grades A to C in the year before last . This had risen to 55 per cent last year and the school was aiming for 60 per cent this year. Jiang Qinqin: Her facial features are exquisite. But her black eyes are rather obvious in daily look. /200911/89458
