Todd: So, Abidemi, weve been talking about your country, Nigeria. Now, youve mentioned that theres different langauges in different regions. Abidemi: Thats correct. Todd: Now, are they similar or are they completely different? Abidemi: I believe theyre completely different. Nigeria has over 250 languages. Todd: Whoa, really, 250 for the whole country? Abidemi: Yes. Yes. So thats not even counting the dialects, when you start breaking them down into dialects, I believe there are over 500, maybe even thousands of dialects, because Nigeria was a British colony, so these were distinct communities and groups of people before the British came in. So thats why, one of the reasons we have so many languages. However, we have four official languages, of course English, we need that to unite everybody. And in schools people learn English. We all have Yoruba in the southwestern part of Nigeria, which is my native language. We have Igbo in the southeastern part and Hausa in the northern part of Nigeria, yes. Todd: Wow! Can you talk a little bit about each language? Now, you said your language is Yoruba? Abidemi: Yes, thats correct, Yoruba is a tonal language like Chinese or Cantonese, unlike Cantonese, we have three tones and not four, so ba, ba, ba, I dont know if you can tell the difference between those three words but they are different, three different words. Igbo, Im not so sure, but its a completely different language, if somebodys speaking it I would not be able to understand. Todd: And what region is that in? Abidemi: Its in the southeastern part of Nigeria. And then finally Hausa, its more ... its closer to Arabic I believe and a lot of Hausas are Muslims, so I think theres that relationship between those two languages. Todd: So they sound completely different from each other? Abidemi: Completely different, and because we have so many languages sometimes you would have a neighboring community but people cant understand each other unless they speak in English because their languages are nothing alike, yeah. Todd: So how common is it to find somebody who speaks all three languages, the three major languages? Abidemi: There are some people who do. There are some people who do, especially businessmen, a lot of Yorubas and Igbos are very business oriented, but traditionally men, they will travel to different parts of Nigeria and some other countries in West Africa to do trade. So for those people it was essential to learn languages, so those people can. Nowadays most people just speak two, you speak English and your native language. So maybe its becoming rarer and rarer to find people who speak all three languages. Todd: So are these languages all taught in the school system? Abidemi: For the most part no, which I think its very unfortunate, I think its something we should be very proud of. But now the emphasis is on English. So a lot of parents want their children to learn English in school, the top schools are mainly English and the onus is on the families to teach their children their native languages at home or maybe if you live in a neighborhood, for example if youre Yoruba like I am, if you live in a neighborhood where there are other Igbos, of course you would have Yoruba at home and Igbo being spoken to you by your friends and you might be able to pick it up that way, but generally no. So for me, when I was growing up I went to English speaking schools so I learned English at school, I never learned my native language at school at all. But at home I tried by myself, I studied my language by myself, so thats how I learned to speak. Todd: So do you think youll pass on the language to your children some day? Abidemi: I want to, most definitely, yes. I think from learning different languages myself, I speak French as well, I think its really important, my native language is my language and as much as English is important in the world today, I think my native language, Yoruba, is part of my identity. And for my children too, I think its important for them to learn, so yes, I would like them to speak it. Todd: Oh, I agree, ones native language is always the most important. Abidemi: Exactly. Exactly. Todd: Thats cool though, so youve got three distinct different languages, more. Abidemi: More. More. Todd: More, but three major distinct languages. Abidemi: Yes, these are the three major ethnicities — ethnic groups in Nigeria, yes. Todd: Well thanks. Abidemi: Thank you. The British are always gentle and polite. A:What do you think of the British?甲:你怎么看待英国人?B:The British are always gentle and polite. A:And they are also kind and tolerant. What is the difference between British English and American English? 英式英语和美式英语有什么区别?A:I found the English language here is somehow different from what I learned. B:It is because what you learned before is American English. A:What is the difference between British English and American English? Such as spelling, pronunciation, grammer, etc.

It was part of a Masters program, and part of the masters program was to go into the wilderness, and I guess it was based on a Native American vision quest. Sorie: Very interesting. So whats a vision quest? Mark: I guess a vision quest is when you — its like a rite of passage, like a ritual where you leave where you were, at that place in your life and you enter a space which is kind of fresh or allows for the next stage to manifest almost, so you enter that threshold, that vacant space between and perhaps in that time, youre gonna, you might have a vision, or you might not but when you come out the other side youre probably, most likely, going to be a little bit different than when you went into it. Sorie: So, tell me about the beginning. What was your feeling towards this experience? Mark: Oh, I was super excited. Before I went I... they recommended like not drinking caffeine and things like that, in preparation for going there because... and sugar even because those little things have such control over our every day, that if were suddenly fasting when were in the wilderness, then if we loose that caffeine and sugar its gonna like... maybe get headaches or something like that, so I prepared by dropping the caffeine and the sugar and even before I went, I noticed like clarity coming that wasnt there even before I went. Sorie: OK, so that was your physical preparation. Did you do any mental preparation? Mark: Yeah, with my wife, I also did a mini-fast, which was for one day. Sorie: OK, and after that, you went to this... the wilderness in Colorado. Can you tell us how this place looked? Mark: It was dry, and we took a long time to get there in the car. It was about four hours from a place called Boulder, which is a town there. A long drive, lots of fun, talking in the car, singing, and then we arrived and the air was dry and we had a dodgy map and eventually we found the place and it was quite high — the altitude — I cant remember exactly how high it was but it was quite high, not far from the snow line but it was summer, and it was a forest and we were staying in this Aspen woodland. Thats where we were camping and the land was privately owned so that allowed for security and peace of mind. Sorie: And how many days were you there? Mark: In that space camping, on that land in total I think it was ten days of which three and a half were alone. Sorie: And did you have any food? What would you eat every day? and drink? Mark: Well, when we were together — it was about ten, eleven other people — so when we were together with those people, we brought all our own food in, and we were kind of paired up, so each pair would make a certain meal every day, and we would eat kind of communally, and in those three and a half days, as part of the vision quest, there was not going to be any eating at all. Sorie: Were you afraid something would happen in the wilderness? Mark: No, I really like being in the wilderness. Sorie: Wow, yeah, it sounds very daunting really. I wouldnt be able to do what you did. Mark: Would you have been scared? Sorie: Definitely. I dont think I would have been able to do it, so I am very happy for you.

Todd: Looking back I think other roles were kind of traditional like I have two sisters and they usually had the responsibility of doing the cleaning, and I had the responsibility of , you know, mowing the lawn, and taking out the trash and cleaning up the yard and stuff like that. Was it similar in your house? Buddhi: Well, dad used to do stuff like that and my brother and I didnt do much work. Todd: You were spoiled. Buddhi: Very, very, very, very .... yeah. Did you ever decide to shift work with your sisters? Todd: No, of course, it never even occured to me. I mean, when youre young, you just do they tell you to do, and to be honest I was very happy. I think I loved doing yardwork. I loved mowing the grass and pruning the trees and, you know, taking about the trash — anything that was physical I enjoyed. I didnt enjoy cleaning. But you never had to do that? Buddhi: Well, I cleaned my own room and my brother cleaned his own, and I mean, its obvious and its ... I mean... its something we really should do, like at home. When we eat, you clean your dish, and maybe we ... when I grew up, Id wash ... Ill do the dishes, and even if I didnt do my mom wouldnt expect me to do it, and make sure I do it somehow. If its not done, shed do it. If I do it, well, shell be thankful. Todd: So, in your household, who mops the floor? Buddhi: My dad would. Todd: Your dad would. Who washes the windows? Buddhi: My dad, yeah. Todd: Oh, your dad! Hes hardworking. OK, who does the laundry? Buddhi: My mom or myself. Todd: Or yourself? Really! OK. What does your brother do? Buddhi: Most of the time, like, hes about eight years older than me, so as soon as he graduated from high school he went abroad for high studies, so when he was doing the usual stuff, I was a kid, so I was not doing anything, so soon after he went I took over or something like that. Todd: Well you did some stuff. Buddhi: I did. Im proud.
