  • Todd: So, Abidemi, weve been talking about your country, Nigeria. Now, youve mentioned that theres different langauges in different regions. Abidemi: Thats correct. Todd: Now, are they similar or are they completely different? Abidemi: I believe theyre completely different. Nigeria has over 250 languages. Todd: Whoa, really, 250 for the whole country? Abidemi: Yes. Yes. So thats not even counting the dialects, when you start breaking them down into dialects, I believe there are over 500, maybe even thousands of dialects, because Nigeria was a British colony, so these were distinct communities and groups of people before the British came in. So thats why, one of the reasons we have so many languages. However, we have four official languages, of course English, we need that to unite everybody. And in schools people learn English. We all have Yoruba in the southwestern part of Nigeria, which is my native language. We have Igbo in the southeastern part and Hausa in the northern part of Nigeria, yes. Todd: Wow! Can you talk a little bit about each language? Now, you said your language is Yoruba? Abidemi: Yes, thats correct, Yoruba is a tonal language like Chinese or Cantonese, unlike Cantonese, we have three tones and not four, so ba, ba, ba, I dont know if you can tell the difference between those three words but they are different, three different words. Igbo, Im not so sure, but its a completely different language, if somebodys speaking it I would not be able to understand. Todd: And what region is that in? Abidemi: Its in the southeastern part of Nigeria. And then finally Hausa, its more ... its closer to Arabic I believe and a lot of Hausas are Muslims, so I think theres that relationship between those two languages. Todd: So they sound completely different from each other? Abidemi: Completely different, and because we have so many languages sometimes you would have a neighboring community but people cant understand each other unless they speak in English because their languages are nothing alike, yeah. Todd: So how common is it to find somebody who speaks all three languages, the three major languages? Abidemi: There are some people who do. There are some people who do, especially businessmen, a lot of Yorubas and Igbos are very business oriented, but traditionally men, they will travel to different parts of Nigeria and some other countries in West Africa to do trade. So for those people it was essential to learn languages, so those people can. Nowadays most people just speak two, you speak English and your native language. So maybe its becoming rarer and rarer to find people who speak all three languages. Todd: So are these languages all taught in the school system? Abidemi: For the most part no, which I think its very unfortunate, I think its something we should be very proud of. But now the emphasis is on English. So a lot of parents want their children to learn English in school, the top schools are mainly English and the onus is on the families to teach their children their native languages at home or maybe if you live in a neighborhood, for example if youre Yoruba like I am, if you live in a neighborhood where there are other Igbos, of course you would have Yoruba at home and Igbo being spoken to you by your friends and you might be able to pick it up that way, but generally no. So for me, when I was growing up I went to English speaking schools so I learned English at school, I never learned my native language at school at all. But at home I tried by myself, I studied my language by myself, so thats how I learned to speak. Todd: So do you think youll pass on the language to your children some day? Abidemi: I want to, most definitely, yes. I think from learning different languages myself, I speak French as well, I think its really important, my native language is my language and as much as English is important in the world today, I think my native language, Yoruba, is part of my identity. And for my children too, I think its important for them to learn, so yes, I would like them to speak it. Todd: Oh, I agree, ones native language is always the most important. Abidemi: Exactly. Exactly. Todd: Thats cool though, so youve got three distinct different languages, more. Abidemi: More. More. Todd: More, but three major distinct languages. Abidemi: Yes, these are the three major ethnicities — ethnic groups in Nigeria, yes. Todd: Well thanks. Abidemi: Thank you.
  • Katia: So, Enam, lets talk about environmental problems of our countries. In Bangladesh, what is an environmental problem? Enam: Actually, we have a lot of environmental problems in Bangladesh but mainly Id say the soil contamination is quite bad, and also the air pollution and nowadays we also have water pollution because of tanneries in the cities. Katia: So, tell me a little bit more about soil contamination? Enam: Actually, we used to use a lot of polythene bags while shopping for the last ten or fifteen years, but the government has banned polythene two years ago I think but still, we still have a lot of polythene bags in our soil and the polythene bags, it doesnt go away, or it stays in the ground for more than a hundred years, and for that reason the soil loses its fertility and also even if you want to ... if you try to build buildings, you cannot build more than a certain level. Katia: Alright, what about the air pollution? Is it a big problem? Enam: Actually, yes, it is a big problem in the capital city in Dhaka because there are a lot of transports, like cars there, and some of them are very old, and it pollutes a lot and theres dust everywhere in Dhaka, so if you go out in Dhaka in the moring, you must have to take a shower at night. Katia: Wow! That must be something else. In regard to air pollution, is there something being done to help the problem? Enam: Yeah, actually, the government is taking a lot of steps like nowadays if you want to import second hand cars from other countries, it couldnt be older than six years, and they always check the transports that are being driven in Dhaka, and if it it is like bad to the environment, they just ban those transportation and tranports from Dhaka. Katia: And you also mentioned water pollution. What is the situation with water pollution? Enam: Actually, the situation is really bad, like the water we have supplied by the government as a infrastructure in Dhaka, its really bad. The quality is really bad. You cannot drink that water, and if you want to use that water, you have to like boil that water, and you have to add all this purification process to use the water. And also, we had some tanneries in the city, around the city, and the waste from those tanneries went into the river and it was quite a bad situation, then the government decided transfer these tanneries out of the city in another place, and it was mandatory for the tanneries to use some more technology to reduce the amount of waste they produce. Katia: OK, that sounds good. I hope it will benefit the city. Enam: Yes, I hope so.
