Americans love pets. And it's not just puppy love, either. Many pet owners treat their furry friends as part of the family. Sometimes they spice up their pets' lives with entertaining s and amusing toys. If they have an eye for fashion, pet owners can dress their pets in stylish clothes. For special occasions, they can use canine perfume to make their dogs smell, well, less beastly. You might say Americans treat their pets like they treat their children-sometimes even better. In America, there are more households with pets than those with children. At least 43 percent of U.S. homes have pets of some sort. Exotic creatures, such as monkeys, snakes and even wolves, find a home with some Americans. More common pets include tropical fish, mice and birds. But the all-time favorites are cats and dogs, even at the White House. The Clintons' cat, Socks, has replaced the Bushes' dog, Millie, as reigning First Pet. Americans sometimes have strong feelings about whether dogs or cats make better pets. "Dog people" and "cat people" often enjoy friendly rivalries. Leading a dog's life in America isn't such a bad thing. Many grocery stores sell gourmet pet foods to owners eager to please their pets. In Houston, Texas, dogs can have their dinner delivered to their homes, just like pizza. Well-to-do canines can attend doggy daycare centers while their owners work. Pets can even accompany their owners on vacation. Fancy hotels are beginning to accommodate both man and beast. Furry guests at Four Seasons Hotels can enjoy gourmet meals served on fine china and sleep in soft beds. Beneath the fluffy luxuries, there lies a basic American belief: Pets have a right to be treated well. At least 75 animal welfare organizations exist in America. These provide care and adoption services for homeless and abused animals. Veterinarians can give animals an incredible level of medical careNfor an incredible price. To pay for the high-tech health care, people can buy health insurance for their pets. And when it's time to say good-bye, owners can bury their pets in a respectable pet cemetery. The average American enjoys having pets around, and for good reason. Researchers have discovered that interacting with animals lowers a person's blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from burglars and unwelcome visitors. Cats can help rid the home of unwanted pests. Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can provide companionship and love. In many cases, having a pet prepares a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Pets even encourage social relationships: They give their owners an appearance of friendliness, and they provide a good topic of conversation. Pets are as basic to American culture as hot dogs or apple pie. To Americans, pets are not just property, but a part of the family. After all, pets are people, too. /200804/34320The notorious cheap skate explaining to a friend how to find his apartment. He said. ″Come up to 5M and ring the doorbell with your elbow. When the door open. Push with your foot.″一个出了名的吝啬鬼在向一个朋友解释怎么找到他家时说:“你上到五楼,找中间那个门,然后用你的胳膊肘按门铃。 ″Why use my elbow and foot?″″Well. Gosh,″ was the reply. ″You#39;re not coming empty-hangded, are you?″“为什么要用我的肘和脚呢?”“你的双手得拿礼物啊。 At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, doctor#39;s orders can include an unlikely prescription: meditation. #39;I recommend five minutes, twice a day, and then gradually increase,#39; said Aditi Nerurkar, a primary-care doctor and assistant medical director of the Cheng amp; Tsui Center for Integrative Care, which offers alternative medical treatment at the Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospital. #39;It#39;s basically the same way I prescribe medicine. I don#39;t start you on a high dose right away.#39; She recommends that patients eventually work up to about 20 minutes of meditating, twice a day, for conditions including insomnia and irritable bowel syndrome. Integrative medicine programs including meditation are increasingly showing up at hospitals and clinics across the country. Recent research has found that meditation can lower blood pressure and help patients with chronic illness cope with pain and depression. In a study published last year, meditation sharply reduced the risk of heart attack or stroke among a group of African-Americans with heart disease. At Beth Israel Deaconess, meditation and other mind-body therapies are slowly being worked into the primary-care setting. The program began offering some services over the past six months and hopes eventually to have group meditation classes, said Dr. Nerurkar. Health experts say meditation shouldn#39;t be used to replace traditional medical therapies, but rather to complement them. While it is clear that #39;when you breathe in a very slow, conscious way it temporarily lowers your blood pressure,#39; such techniques shouldn#39;t be used to substitute for medications to manage high blood pressure and other serious conditions, said Josephine Briggs, director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health. In general, she said, meditation can be useful for symptom management, not to cure or treat disease. Dr. Briggs said the agency is funding a number of studies looking at meditation and breathing techniques and their effect on numerous conditions, including hot flashes that occur during menopause. If meditation is found to be beneficial, it could help women avoid using hormone treatments, which can have detrimental side effects, she said. Martha O#39;Boyle, a 51-year-old in Fremont, Calif., has suffered from chronic pain in her arms, chest and elsewhere since suffering from a heart attack two years ago. #39;Here#39;s a cardiologist telling me to go and meditate,#39; said Ms. O#39;Boyle. #39;I#39;m thinking, does she think I#39;m crazy?#39;奥伊说,“这儿有位心脏病专家建议我去进行冥想。 O#39;Boyle began taking meditation classes at Stanford Hospital amp; Clinics in 2011. The eight-week class consisted of once-a-week sessions lasting two to three hours. #39;Once I started the class I saw the benefits of it,#39; she said. Now, Ms. O#39;Boyle meditates every day for 20 to 45 minutes. #39;The pain is not gone, but it helps me cope with it,#39; she said.2011年,奥伊开始参加斯坦福医院诊所(Stanford Hospital amp; Clinics)开办的冥想课。 The most common type of meditation recommended by doctors and used in hospital programs is called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, which was devised at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Nerurkar said she doesn#39;t send patients to a class for training. Instead, she and other physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess will demonstrate the technique in the office. #39;Really it#39;s just sitting in a quiet posture that#39;s comfortable, closing your eyes and watching your breath,#39; she said. Murali Doraiswamy, a professor of psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., says it isn#39;t clearly understood how meditation works on the body. Some forms of meditation have been found to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which stimulates the body#39;s relaxation response, improves blood supply, slows down heart rate and breathing and increases digestive activity, he said. It also slows down the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol. Dr. Doraiswamy says he recommends meditation for people with depression, panic or anxiety disorders, ongoing stress, or for general health maintenance of brain alertness and cardiovascular health. Thousands of studies have been published that look at meditation, Dr. Doraiswamy said. Of these, about 500 have been clinical trials testing meditation for various ailments, but only about 40 trials have been long-term studies. It isn#39;t known whether there is an optimal amount of time for meditating that is most effective. And, it hasn#39;t been conclusively shown that the practice causes people to live longer or prevents them from getting certain chronic diseases. Some short-term studies have found meditation can improve cognitive abilities such as attention and memory, said Dr. Doraiswamy. Using imaging, scientists have shown that meditation can improve the functional performance of specific circuits in the brain and may reduce age-related shrinkage of several brain centers, particularly those that may be vulnerable in disorders such as Alzheimer#39;s disease. In a study published last year in the American Heart Association journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, African-Americans with heart disease who practiced Transcendental Meditation regularly were 48% less likely to have a heart attack or stroke, or to die, than those who attended a health-education class. Among the meditation group, there were 20 such occurrences, compared with 32 in the control group. The study, which ran for more than five years, involved about 200 people. Recent research found that meditation can result in molecular changes affecting the length of telomeres, a protective covering at the end of chromosomes that gets shorter as people age. The study involved 40 family caregivers of dementia patients. Half of the participants meditated briefly on a daily basis and the other half listened to relaxing music for 12 minutes a day. The eight-week study found that people who meditated showed a 43% improvement in telomerase activity, an enzyme that regulates telomere length, compared with a 3.7% gain in the group listening to music. The participants meditating also showed improved mental and cognitive functioning and lower levels of depression compared with the control group. The pilot study was published in January in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. Government-funded research also is exploring meditation#39;s effect on dieting and depression.

They may have promised to have and to hold for richer and for poorer. But wives are most interested in the richer part.In a British study of married men and women, the majority of wives - 59 per cent - said they would divorce immediately if their future economic security was assured. The survey also found more than half of husbands thought their marriage was "loveless".And among both sexes, more than one in ten wished they had wed someone else.Responding to the astonishing results, relationship experts warned couples to avoid getting stuckin a rut- or risk the trauma of divorce. The survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 12 per cent would stay in an unhappy relationship just for an easy life.Almost 30 per cent said they were staying in a doomed marriage to save themselves going through a massive upheaval.Thirty-seven per cent said they were staying for the sake of the children.Almost a third of those polled were concerned they would be left with absolutely nothing if they walked out on their marriage. And 30 per cent of men said they were scared that they would have to leave without their children. The survey was commissioned by solicitors Seddons after a rush of divorce applications in the first week of the new year.Overall, 12 per cent said they were in a loveless relationship and more than a third (35 per cent) believed their marriage would turn stale in the near future.A shocking 56 per cent admitted they were not completely happy in their relationship - and more than half said they had considered splitting from their partner.A spokesman for the marriage counselling service-Relate said: "It's so easy for married couples to get stuck in a rut once the realities of paying the bills and getting the children's breakfast sets in."Relationships inevitably change over time. Divorce impacts on every single area of a person's life. Dividing up the family home, pets and everything they own is just part of the process." /200803/32061

This summer the silk road is running in a new direction: leading not from India, but from Italy. And men#39;s fashion – from suits to shirts, trousers and even raincoats – is being reimagined in the fabric. Ermenegildo Zegna#39;s new Passion for Silk range includes sharply tailored jackets with mother-of-pearl buttons (#163;1,090), matching trousers (#163;900) and print silk shirts (#163;880). “Silk has amazing properties,” says Anna Zegna, image director at the Italian label. “It#39;s versatile and luxurious, but it is also the ideal fabric to create a modern, masculine silhouette.” Etro, too, showed a large number of silk jackets and suits for spring/summer in everything from bold paisley patterns to conservative plain shades of blue-grey in rougher finishes. Silk “is both practical and esoteric”, says creative director Kean Etro. “It takes colour like no other material and adds richness to the cloth; you can achieve all sorts of effects with it. It can be rough or smooth, dull or shiny.” But will men really wear silk? Aside from the usual feminine associations, it isn#39;t, despite Etro#39;s claims to practicality, the easiest of fabrics to care for: it stains, wrinkles and let#39;s not mention the dry-cleaning bills. Zegna clearly believes the answer is “yes”. Indeed, in 2009, the group put its investment where its fibres were, and acquired Tessitura di Novara, a company based in northern Italy that has been producing silks since 1932. Now, together with the main Zegna manufacturing base, the silk range can be spun, dyed, woven and finished entirely in-house. “It was just after we had just finished the current collection that I saw the Passion for Silk campaign from Zegna,” says Etro. “I#39;m sure people think we get together and decide these things in advance, but I promise you we don#39;t!”“我们刚刚制作完成当前真丝系列后,才看到杰尼亚的Passion for Silk系列产品的推介活动,”埃特罗说。“我确信大家会觉得我们两家是提前合起伙来决定的这些事,但我向你保我们并没有这么做!”In London, Savile Row tailor Richard James has noticed increased demand for silk over the past couple of years, particularly from bespoke customers. “I#39;m not sure that men have ever thought of silk as being overly feminine,” he says. “Silk pocket squares, silk linings, silk ties, silk shirts, silk socks ... I#39;d say men have always embraced silk and used it very cleverly as a means of self-expression. Silk adds a bit of dressiness, so it#39;s perfect for evening wear.” Silk is also one way to make a statement – see Tom Ford#39;s lilac tuxedo jacket (#163;2,000), main picture, or Burberry Prorsum#39;s blue metallic raincoat (#163;1,895). So what about caring for silk? “It#39;s not really more difficult to care for than any other luxury fabric,” says James. “But you#39;ve got to look after it. It#39;s not polyester!” Etro, meanwhile, insists that silk is “the hardest-working” of all fabrics, citing its versatility. If pure silk still proves too much of a sartorial leap, it is an easier sell when mixed with other traditional fabrics. “We often mix it with some wool, to give it body, or cotton for a more casual look,” Etro says. James agrees: “Mixing silk with linen, wool or cotton gives it more structure and makes it easier to work with. It adds a defining edge to a fabric, giving it lustre, which makes for a clean silhouette. Wool and silk blends are popular this season. As are linen and silk blends; the earthiness of linen combines beautifully with the sharpness of silk.” Silk-mix fabrics that work for every day include navy blazers in a 92 per cent silk/8 per cent linen mix from Piombo (#163;1,085); one-button blazers in a linen, wool and silk blend from Brioni (#163;1,435); soft grey single-breasted jackets in a cashmere and silk blend from Loro Piana (#163;2,195); and jackets in equal amounts of cotton and silk from Sandro (#163;410). So, check the label of your summer jacket: you could just be wearing a touch of this season#39;s most sought-after fabric and not even know it. /201306/243952

Google expert says TV is deadOne of the founding fathers of the internet has predicted the end of traditional television.Vint Cerf, who helped to build the internet while working as a researcher in America, said that television was approaching its "iPod moment"In the same way that people now download their favourite music onto their iPod, he said that viewers would soon be downloading most of favourite programmes onto their computers."85 per cent of all we watch is pre-recorded, so you can set your system to download it all the time," said Mr Cerf, who is now the vice-president of the Google, the world's largest search engine."You're still going to need live television for certain things - like news, sporting events and emergencies - but increasingly it is going to be almost like the iPod, where you download content to look at later."Although television on demand has not yet become a mainstream activity in the UK, the B, ITV and Channel 4 have all invested vast sums of money in technology which enables viewers to watch their favourite shows on their computers. But some critics, including some internet service providers, have warned that the internet will collapse under the strain of millions of people downloading programmes at the same time.Over the next four years, it is thought that the number of s watched over the internet will quadruple, with people moving from short clips to hour-long programmes.Broadband companies claim that the service will cause "traffic jams", which will cost millions of pounds to sort out .But Mr Cerf dismissed the warnings as "scare tactics", saying that critics had predicted 20 years ago that the net would collapse when people all around the world started to use it en masse."In the intervening 30 years it's increased a million times... We're far from exhausting the capacity," he said. "It's an understandable worry when they see huge amounts of information being moved around online."Setting out his vision for the future of the internet, he said he wanted it to reach as many people as possible."I want more internet," he said. "I want every one of the six billion people on the planet to be able to connect to the internet."(AP) /200804/33392
