CHINESE consumer confidence in foreign milk powder has been shaken by the news that toxic bacteria was found in imported dairy products from New Zealand. There’s anger over another safety scandal involving a trusted foreign supplier, especially after traces of dicyandiamde, a potentially toxic chemical, was found in some Fonterra products in January. Zheng Juan, a mother of a two-year-old girl in north China’s Tianjin City, said she will not be buying New Zealand milk powder, in future. “We used to think imported milk powder was better than domestic products,” Zheng said.“我们曾经认为进口奶粉比国内产品更好,”郑说。Chinese have been upset by the latest disclosure by Fonterra, as the whey protein was produced in May 2012 but problems were only reported this month. According to Zhu Yi, associate professor in food science and nutrition at China Agricultural University, clostridium botulinum can grow in canned food which has been poorly processed, packaged or stored, thus posing a threat to babies below the age of one. On Sunday, China’s importers began to recall and seal products produced by Fonterra after the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine named four domestic companies that had imported whey products which may have been tainted. The four are China’s biggest food and beverage firms Hangzhou Wahaha Health Food Co Ltd, Hangzhou Wahaha Import amp; Export Co Ltd, Shanghai Tangjiu (Group) Co Ltd and Shanghai-based Dumex Baby Food Co Ltd.四家公司分别是中国最大的食品和饮料公司杭州娃哈哈保健食品有限公司、杭州娃哈哈进出口有限公司、上海糖酒(集团)有限公司和上海多美滋婴儿食品有限公司。Foreign milk products became increasingly sought after in China after a series of domestic food scandals. Nutrition experts have found a cheap way to help save the environment and solve the food shortage crisis. Eating insects seems to be squeamish. But as a source, it is abundant and rich in calcium and protein. The European Union thinks creepy crawlies should start appearing on s after experts in Brussels recommended that bugs could be a vital source of nutrition. So scorpion soup and cricket casserole could soon be options, as the European Commission has now offered £2.65 million into a project to promote eating insects. Farmers can set up co-ops to deal with the supermarkets. The commission has also ordered the UK Food Standards Agency to investigate and potentially look at ways to make entomophagy - the eating of insects - a more popular choice. The research institute which is awarded the money by the commission will have to research quality and safety, potential allergies and what sort of proteins the insects offer.Professor Marcel Dicke, leading a team at Wageningen University, in Holland, is applying for the grant. He said: "By 2020 you will be buying insects in supermarkets. I think it will start with ground-up insects in sauces and burgers."Snacking on silkworm moth larvae or adding blitzed bees to sauces could offer a much-needed solution to soaring costs of red meat. One study found that grasshoppers offer 20 percent protein with a tiny six percent fat, compared to lean ground beef's 24 percent protein and 18 percent fat.Alternatively insects emit fewer greenhouse gases than cattle, require less feed and are viewed as more environmentally friendly. /201109/152734

Fifty-thousand festival-goers were battling against the elements yesterday as the Burning Man festival got underway for its 25th year. The festival site, located on a dry lake bed two hours north-east of Reno, California, was consumed in one of the periodic dust storms that affect the area. The 'white out' conditions sent some revellers running for cover. Others, well prepared with goggles and bandanas to cover their faces, partied on. This year the annual event - marked by public art, self-expression and an eight-day experiment in community - sold out for the first time in its history. Ticket sales hit the 50,000-person limit the U.S. Bureau of Land Management allows forBlack Rock City, the temporary home of Burning Man erected and taken down every year. Many observers say Burning Man has become more desert metropolis than during the past 15 years, with more rules and restrictions, the fundamental things that define Burning Man are still intact. Brian Doherty has been making the annual trek to Black Rock City since 1995. In 2004, he wrote the book, 'This Is Burning Man,' which chronicles the event's history, organizers and culture. Early Burning Man's has changed, Doherty said shortly before the 2011 event began. What hasn't changed, Doherty said, is that it can compel a mild-mannered accountant to roll naked in playa mud without fear of consequences (except for an uncomfortable alkali burn). But Black Rock City implemented one change in 2009 that struck Doherty as particularly egregious: early arrivals to Burning Man were given a bar code to be scanned before they could enter. He thought it was a little too 'Big Brother.' Danielle Gann-Lind, a 43-year-old from Reno who has gone to Burning Man every year since 2000, said it's inevitable some Burners will sing the event's death knell each year. They always come back every year and say, "Oh, it was better last year; Burning Man sucks" But she thinks “Burning Man” is good. /201109/152549
