Obesity may have harmful effects on the brain, and exercise may counteract many of those negative effects, according to sophisticated new neurological experiments with mice, even when the animals do not lose much weight. While it#39;s impossible to know if human brains respond in precisely the same way to fat and physical activity, the findings offer one more reason to get out and exercise. It#39;s been known for some time that obesity can alter cognition in animals. Past experiments with lab rodents, for instance, have shown that obese animals display poor memory and learning skills compared to their normal-weight peers. They don#39;t recognize familiar objects or recall the location of the exit in mazes that they#39;ve negotiated multiple times. But scientists hadn#39;t understood how excess weight affects the brain. Fat cells, they knew, manufacture and release substances into the bloodstream that flow to other parts of the body, including the heart and muscles. There, these substances jump-start biochemical processes that produce severe inflammation and other conditions that can lead to poor health. Many thought the brain, though, should be insulated from those harmful effects. It contains no fat cells and sits behind the protective blood-brain barrier that usually blocks the entry of undesirable molecules. However, recent disquieting studies in animals indicate that obesity weakens that barrier, leaving it leaky and permeable. In obese animals, substances released by fat cells can ooze past the barrier and into the brain. The consequences of that seepage became the subject of new neurological experiments conducted by researchers at Georgia Regents University in Augusta and published last month in The Journal of Neuroscience. For the studies, the scientists gathered mice bred to overeat and grow obese, which, after a few weeks of sitting quietly in their cages and eating at will, the animals had obligingly accomplished. As they grew rotund and accumulated more fat cells, the researchers found, their blood showed increasingly hefty doses of a substance called interleukin 1 that is created by fat cells and known to cause inflammation. In these mice, as interleukin 1 migrated to the head, it passed the blood-brain barrier and entered areas such as the hippocampus, a part of the brain critical for learning and memory. There, it essentially gummed up the works, the researchers found when they examined tissue from the animals#39; brains, which had high levels of interleukin 1 together with widesp markers of inflammation. While inflammation can represent a healthy response to invading molecules, it hurts cells if it persists. The researchers also noted extremely low levels in these mice brains of a biochemical associated with healthy synapse function. Synapses are the structures that connect one neuron to another and shunt messages between them. Healthy synapses respond to demands on the brain by slowing or speeding messages, keeping the brain#39;s nervous-system traffic manageable. But low levels of the marker of synapse health suggested to the researchers that in these obese animals#39; inflamed brains, synapses were no longer functioning properly and messages between neurons likely jerked, hiccuped or stalled. That possibility was borne out by subsequent tests on the memory and thinking of some of the remaining obese mice. They performed miserably. But whether excessive fat cells alone were the underlying cause of the changes in the animals#39; brains was not clear. Other physiological factors ;could have been contributing,; said Alexis Stranahan, a professor at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents, who oversaw the study. So, to isolate the impact of the fat, the researchers simply removed most of it, surgically excising the large bands of fat that each mouse bore around its middle. After recovery, these slenderized mice showed almost no interleukin 1 in their bloodstreams and, Algernon-like, soon were acing cognitive tests that had stumped them before surgery. Conversely, when the scientists implanted the preserved fat pads into previously lean mice — and haven#39;t we all had nightmares about something like that happening to us in our sleep? — the animals almost immediately grew dimmer, performing far worse than previously on cognitive tests, although nothing else in their lives had changed. The results convincingly implicated fat cells as the primary cause of the mice#39;s cognitive decline. But while provocative, the findings had little practical value for people, the scientists realized, since even the most extensive liposuction procedure in humans would remove far less fat than had been excised from the obese mice. So the scientists turned, as a less-invasive alternative, to exercise. Gathering more of the obesity-prone mice, they allowed all of them to grow heavy, but then started half on a daily 45-minute program of tmill running, with encouragement provided by small puffs of air if they began to flag. The other mice remained sedentary. After 12 weeks, the running mice still weighed about the same as the unexercised animals. But they had lost significant amounts of fat from around their middles, while adding lean muscle. More telling, they did much better on cognitive tests than the sedentary mice and, when the researchers examined tissue from their hippocampi, showed little evidence of inflammation and robust levels of the chemical marker of synaptic health. The results suggested that, as the scientists write in the study, ;tmill training normalized hippocampal function,; even in animals born to be fat and that remained heavy.12周后,每天跑步的小鼠体重依旧与从未运动的小鼠差不多。 Of course, these studies were conducted in mice, not people, whose brains may respond very differently. But the possibility that humans, too, may respond in similar ways is tantalizing, Dr. Stranahan said, and the takeaway from her study worth repeating. ;Get out and move,; she said, even — and especially — if you carry extra weight. Talk with your doctor about a safe and tolerable exercise program, and then try to stick with that routine so that extra pounds won#39;t weigh too heavily on your mind. It isn#39;t just the beer that contributes to beer bellies. It could also be the extra calories, fat and unhealthy eating choices that may come with moderate drinking. A recent study found that men consume an additional 433 calories (equivalent to a McDonald#39;s double cheeseburger) on days they drink a moderate amount of alcohol. About 61% of the caloric increase comes from the alcohol itself. Men also report eating higher amounts of saturated fats and meat, and less fruit and milk, on those days than on days when they aren#39;t drinking, the study showed. Women fared a bit better, taking in an extra 300 calories on moderate-drinking days, from the alcohol and eating fattier foods. But women#39;s increase in calories from additional eating wasn#39;t statistically significant, the study said. #39;Men and women ate less healthily on days they drank alcohol,#39; said Rosalind Breslow, an epidemiologist with the federal National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and lead author of the study. #39;Poorer food choices on drinking days have public-health implications,#39; she said. (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism)。 The findings dovetail with controlled lab studies in which participants generally eat more food after consuming alcohol. Researchers suggest that alcohol may enhance #39;the short-term rewarding effects#39; of consuming food, according to a 2010 report in the journal Physiology amp; Behavior that reviewed previous studies on alcohol, appetite and obesity. But other studies have pointed to a different trend. Moderate drinkers gain less weight over time than either heavy drinkers or people who abstain from alcohol, particularly women, this research has shown. Moderate drinking is considered having about two drinks a day for men and one for women. #39;People who gain the least weight are moderate drinkers, regardless of [alcoholic] beverage choice,#39; said Eric Rimm, an associate professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard Medical School and chairman of the 2010 review of alcohol in the federal dietary guidelines. The weight-gain difference is modest, and #39;starting to drink is not a weight-loss diet,#39; he said. The various research efforts form part of a long-standing debate about how alcohol affects people#39;s appetites, weight and overall health. Researchers say there aren#39;t simple answers, and suggest that individuals#39; metabolism, drinking patterns and gender may play a role. Alcohol is #39;a real wild card when it comes to weight management,#39; said Karen Miller-Kovach, chief scientific officer of Weight Watchers International. At seven calories per gram, alcohol is closer to fat than to carbohydrate or protein in caloric content, she said. Alcohol tends to lower restraint, she notes, causing a person to become more indulgent with what they#39;re eating. Research bolstering the role of moderate drinking in helping to control weight gain was published in 2004 in the journal Obesity Research. That study followed nearly 50,000 women over eight years. An earlier study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 1994, followed more than 7,000 people for 10 years and found that moderate drinkers gained less weight than nondrinkers. Studies comparing changes in waist circumference among different groups have yielded similar results. Dr. Rimm said it isn#39;t clear why moderate drinking may be protective against typical weight gain, but it could have to do with metabolic adjustments. After people drink alcohol, their heart rate increases so they burn more calories in the following hour. #39;It#39;s a modest amount,#39; he said. #39;But if you take an individual that eats 100 calories instead of a glass of wine, the person drinking the glass of wine will have a slight increase in the amount of calories burned.#39; “这一消耗量并不算高”,他说。 Food choices could also play a role. Some studies suggest that women who drink alcohol eat fewer sweet foods, possibly because alcohol stimulates the same pleasure center in the brain as sweets, said Dr. Rimm. That isn#39;t seen as consistently in men. Men have more of the alcohol dehydrogenase group of enzymes that metabolize some alcohol in the stomach than women, said Andrea N. Giancoli, spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a professional organization. (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics)的新闻发言人。 One theory for what this might mean is that women#39;s bodies divert alcohol not being broken down in the stomach to a different metabolic pathway that results in more calories being burned, said Ms. Giancoli, a registered dietitian near Los Angeles. As a result, fewer calories from alcohol may be stored in women as fat, she said. Another factor is drinking patterns. A 2005 study in the American Journal of Epidemiology looked at data from 45,896 drinkers. It found that as the quantity of drinking increased from one to four drinks in a day, the subjects#39; body-mass index increased. #39;People who drank the least often but drank more on the days that they drank had higher BMI,#39; said Dr. Breslow, who co-authored the study. Dr. Breslow#39;s latest study, which found caloric intake increases with moderate drinking, didn#39;t look at associations between alcohol and body weight or track food choices and diets over time. She suggested that people who increase their caloric intake with moderate drinking one day might compensate the next day by consuming less. The study, which appeared in the May issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and included 1,864 mostly moderate drinkers. Another study, which looked at data from nearly 16,000 individuals over a year, concluded that as alcohol consumption increased there was a decline in diet quality. That research was published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association in 2010. 这项研究刊登在2010年的《美国营养协会杂志》(Journal of the American Dietetic Association)上。 David Jensen, a 56-year-old who considers himself overweight, says cutting his daily drink or two helped him reduce nighttime snacking. #39;You have a glass of wine and then it#39;s, oh man, I need cheese with that, or I need chocolate. You end up eating all this other stuff,#39; said Mr. Jensen, who lives near Seattle and works as a translator for financial clients. Last year he stopped drinking for five months and lost just over 10 pounds #39;with really no effort,#39; Mr. Jensen said. But once he started drinking again his weight went up and he is back to where he started. /201309/256026Just how big are the nation’s biggest banks? Well, the top four alone manage roughly trillion in assets. Bank of America with .12 trillion. The two banks are the only ones with assets exceeding trillion. Citigroup, the third largest bank by assets, isn’t too far behind with .89 trillion and San Francisco-based Wells Fargo按资产规模排序,花旗集团(Citigroup)排名第三,资产为1.89万亿美元,落后第二名不多。 From there the 5th largest bank’s assets, Bank of New York Mellon到了排名第五的纽约梅隆(Bank of New York Mellon),差距一下子拉开,其资产仅为3,710亿美元。The ranking comes from SNL Financial which compiles the data each quarter. There’s hasn’t been much change at the top of the ranking since 2011 when JPM claimed the #1 spot from BofA. Ever since, JPM has held a steady lead over the rest of the nation’s banks–a lead that keeps getting bigger. Just a year ago in the third quarter 2012, JPM’s assets stood at .32 trillion; they’ve since increased 6%. 6%。It will be interesting to see how JPM’s assets evolve over the next 12 months. 2013 wasn’t JPM’s best. CEO Jamie Dimon reported the bank’s first quarterly loss under his watch, it paid billion to settle a big case with the Department of Justice and paid out billions in other suits as well. It was also the first time the bank made a big announcement recently about shutting down a line of business; in September JPM announced it would no longer accept applications for student loans. Wells Fargo, though #4, has also been steadily growing its asset base at a rate even higher than JPM. Over the last 12 months, Wells, lead by CEO John Stumpf, has seen its total assets jump 8% from .37 trillion in the third quarter of 2012. That’s the biggest increase among the big four banks. Much of Wells’ growth is due to some key loan purchases the bank has been making overseas. The bank has picked up several loan portfolios on the cheap from banks in Europe as the market there has been struggling and institutions there look to off-load assets. Wells CFO Tim Sloan spoke about the bank’s overall loan growth at a conference last week and noted the foreign loans. “Foreign loans grew .9 billion or 17%, which included billion from the UK CRE acquisition we completed in the third quarter, as well as growth in our trade finance business, ” he said. Meanwhile both Citi and Bank of America have seen their assets drop over the last few years. Just over the last 12 months both banks shed assets by about 2%. 2%。Both bank have been actively selling non-core assets since the peak of the crisis in order to meet both regulator and shareholder demands. Back in early 2009, BofA’s assets were .32 trillion, or 8.4% more than where they stand today.2009年初,美国的资产为2.32万亿美元,比现在高出8.4%。SNL notes that Citi’s assets will decline even further by approximately .91 billion from the planned sale of its Brazilian credit card and consumer finance business.SNL Financial指出,花旗集团的资产将进一步减少大约39.1亿美元,因为该计划出售其在巴西的信用卡和消费信贷业务。There was only one new bank on the most recent list from SNL. Santa Clara, Calif.-based SVB Financial Group was the lone new entry coming in at #50 with .7 billion in assets. SNL’s rankings include banks and thrifts operating in the U.S. with a deposits-to-assets ratio of at least 25%. That means big firms like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley don’t make the cut since they don’t hold significant deposits.SNL Financial的排名囊括了在美国经营的、存款与资产比率至少为25%的和储蓄机构。

The plague has killed hundreds of millions, sweeping across entire countries and bringing civilizations to their knees. Even though we now know more than those who suffered through the biggest outbreak, knowing more about the disease makes it no less frightening. 10、There Are Different Types鼠疫有不同的类型We hear most about the bubonic plague, but that’s actually just one of three plague varieties. The bubonic plague is distinguished by swollen lymph nodes, called “buboes,” which give the disease its name. This type is sp only through the bites of fleas and blood contact with the infected insect; there is no way that bubonic plague can sp from one person to another. Similarly, septicemic plague is sp only through breaks in the skin and by blood contact. It worsens as bacteria multiply in the blood stream. Septicemic plague has many of the same symptoms as bubonic plague, including fever and chills, but it lacks the bubonic plague’s telltale nodes. The third type is the only one that can transmit from person to person. Pneumonic plague is airborne and can pass from one person (or animal) to another just by breathing in close proximity to someone. The different types of plague can mutate into one another; pneumonic plague and septicemic plague are often complications of untreated bubonic plague. Because the different types have similarly devastating effects, we’ve long thought that bubonic plague was the disease that swept across Europe during the Black Death. New research supported by DNA evidence suggests the Black Death wasn’t bubonic plague after all but the faster-sping pneumonic plague.

When 18-year-old Stian Ytterdahl’s friends dared him to get a tattoo, they gave him only two options to choose from – Barbie on his buttocks or a McDonald’s receipt on his arm. They’re both terrible, but I suppose you can’t blame Stian for choosing the latter.18岁的挪威小伙斯蒂安·伊特多被朋友们怂恿去纹身,但朋友们只给了他两个选择——在臀部纹个芭比娃娃或在手臂上纹麦当劳收据。 “Some of my mates thought I had been a bit too active on the ladies front recently and wanted to punish me,” he said. “When we were in the restaurant on Monday, they said I had to tattoo a Barbie doll on my bum, or the receipt on my arm.” Incidentally, this is the teenager’s first tattoo ever, covering most of his lower right arm. There’s a large McDonalds logo at the top, followed by a list of items he ordered off the – a cheeseburger and four addedtoppings. Stian, from Southwest Norway, also said that his parents were not at all pleased with the turn of events. “I got an email from my dad that wasn’t entirely positive, saying: ‘What on earth have you done?! Do you think you are coming home with that!? Your mother has had a break down.’” Stian’s parents got to know about the tattoo from a report in the local newspaper and they were devastated. The media caught hold of pictures after they were shared by a tattoo artist on Facebook. When Stian had first approached him, he raised an eyebrow, but proceeded anyway. The images, captioned ‘my strangest tattoo so far’, have garnered over 1,000 likes and over 200 shares. “It’s funny to think that I have a tattoo which no one else even has the likes of,” said Stian. Even the date and time is on it. I might not find it funny when I am 50 or 60 years old, but it’s my choice. I might even get a job at McDonald’s now,” he joked. The tattoo artist has put a weird twist on the story – he offered Stian to ink the receipt of the first tattoo on his other arm for free. It’s unbelievable, but he has accepted the offer. So he’ll have a tattoo of a receipt on one arm and a tattoo of the receipt of the tattoo of a receipt on the other. Now that’s just twisted!
