  • So, enough scientists in other disciplines are really asking people to help, and theyre doing a good job of it. For instance, theres eBird, where amateur birdwatchers can upload information about their bird sightings. And then, ornithologists can go and help track populations, migrations, etc. And theres this guy, Mike Oates. Mike Oates lives in the U.K. Hes a director of an electroplating company. Hes found more than 140 comets. Hes found so many comets, they named a comet after him. Its kind of out past Mars. Its a hike. I dont think hes getting his picture taken there anytime soon. But he found 140 comets without a telescope. He downloaded data from the NASA SOHO satellite, and thats how he found them. If we can find comets without a telescope, shouldnt we be able to find words? Now, yall know where Im going with this. Because Im going to the Internet, which is where everybody goes. And the Internet is great for collecting words, because the Internets full of collectors. And this is a little-known technological fact about the Internet,这是一个关于互联网的不为人知的技术事实,but the Internet is actually made up of words and enthusiasm. And words and enthusiasm actually happen to be the recipe for lexicography. Isnt that great? So there are a lot of really good word-collecting sites out there right now,现在已经有很多单词搜集网站了,but the problem with some of them is that theyre not scientific enough. They show the word, but they dont show any context. Where did it come from? Who said it? What newspaper was it in? What book? Because a word is like an archaeological artifact. If you dont know the provenance or the source of the artifact, its not science, its a pretty thing to look at. 201704/504581。
  • Another worrying thing: if youre selling sex in places like Kenya, South Africa or New York,另一件令人担忧的事:如果你在肯尼亚,南非或纽约这些地方卖淫,a police officer can arrest you if youre caught carrying condoms,如果你被抓到持有避套,警察就可以逮捕你,because condoms can legally be used as evidence that youre selling sex. Obviously, this increases HIV risk. Imagine knowing if youre busted carrying condoms, itll be used against you. Its a pretty strong incentive to leave them at home, right?你将会更倾向于把它留在家里,对吧?Sex workers working in these places are forced to make a tough choice between risking arrest or having risky sex. What would you choose? Would you pack condoms to go to work? How about if youre worried the police officer would rape you when he got you in the van? The second approach to regulating sex work seen in these countries is partial criminalization,第二种法律手段被这些国家使用,叫做部分刑事化。where the buying and selling of sex are legal,在这些国家卖春买春是合法的,but surrounding activities, like brothel-keeping or soliciting on the street, are banned. Laws like these -- we have them in the UK and in France -- essentially say to us sex workers,像这样的法律被英国,法国这些国家所实践,本质上是对我们这些性工作者说,;Hey, we dont mind you selling sex, just make sure its done behind closed doors and all alone.;“我不介意你卖淫,但是确保你是偷偷地、一个人做这件事。”And brothel-keeping, by the way, is defined as just two or more sex workers working together. Making that illegal means that many of us work alone,触犯了卖淫必须单独进行的法律条款,which obviously makes us vulnerable to violent offenders. But were also vulnerable if we choose to break the law by working together. 201609/464402。
  • My fellow Americans, This is a season of great hope. This week, Jewish families across our country and around the world, celebrate Passover and retell the story of Gods deliverance of the Jewish people. The story of the Exodus is a story of freedom. It is the story of an incredible people who were liberated from oppression and raised up the face of humankind. Down through the centuries, the Jewish People have lived through one persecution after another – and yet, they persevered and thrived and uplifted the world beyond measure. And now, the State of Israel stands as a monument to their faith and endurance. Another day of faith and celebration is also upon us. This Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Christ and the promise of eternal salvation. It is a holy day of reverence and worship; it is a sacred time that fills the spirit of our Nation with the faith of our people. America is a Nation of believers. As families gather in houses of worship across the Nation, we are grateful for the tremendous blessings of this land, our home. We have a beautiful country, an abundant countryside, and an amazing people with a truly bright and wonderful future. From the beginning, America has been a place that has cherished the freedom of worship. That is the promise the first settlers saw in our vast continent – and it is the promise that our bravest warriors have protected for all of our citizens in centuries since a long time ago. Sadly, many around the globe do not enjoy this freedom – and one of the gravest threats to religious freedom remains the threat of terror. On Palm Sunday, as Christians around the world celebrate the beginning of Holy Week, ISIS murdered at least 45 people and injured over 100 others at two Christian churches in Egypt. We condemn this barbaric attack. We mourn for those who lost loved ones. And we pray for the strength and wisdom to achieve a better tomorrow – one where good people of all faiths, Christians and Muslims and Jewish and Hindu, can follow their hearts and worship according to their conscience. With Gods grace, life always triumphs over death, freedom overcomes oppression, and faith extinguishes fear. This is the source of our hope – and our confidence in the future. I also want to give a special message to those struggling Americans who have felt for too long the bitter taste of hardship. I want you to know: this White House is fighting for you. We are fighting for every American who has been left behind. We are fighting for the right of all citizens to enjoy safety and peace – and to work and live with the dignity that all Children of God are entitled to know. As long as we have faith in each other, and trust in God, we will succeed. Thank you. Have a Happy Easter, a Happy Passover. God bless you. And God bless America.201704/506425。
