Militant Orders His Fighters to Stop Attacks in Pakistan巴激进分子头目下令部下停止袭击 In Pakistan, a fugitive militant commander linked to the al-Qaida network is said to have ordered his fighters to stop attacks on security forces and government installations in the country. The move follows reports the new government has renewed contacts with pro-Taliban militants in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan to seek a peace deal. Reports of contacts between Pakistani authorities and tribal militants have regularly appeared in local media in recent days, but few official details from either side were available. For the first time Wednesday, leaflets containing orders from militant commander Baitullah Mehsud appeared in tribal areas along the Afghan border. He ordered his followers to stop all attacks in Pakistan. In his message, the militant leader has confirmed peace talks are underway with authorities and has promised to punish anyone found violating his orders. Pakistani officials have welcomed his cease-fire announcement, but are refusing to comment directly on reports of talks with the country's most wanted man. Responding to the reported U.S criticism over the peace talks, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammed Sadiq reiterated at a news conference in Islamabad that the government is working on a "comprehensive strategy" to deal with the problem of militancy and terrorism. We believe that military action alone will not be effective in permanently ending the phenomenon of terrorism. We are reaching out to the tribal leaders and notables as part of the political element of our overall strategy in fight against terrorism ... Political engagement is possible only with those who renounce militancy and violence, do not allow the use of our territory against any other country and do not help foreign elements to find hideouts in our country," he said. Taliban commander Mehsud is based in the Waziristan tribal region and is believed to be a facilitator of al-Qaida and Taliban militants launching cross-border attacks on coalition forces in Afghanistan. He is accused of ordering the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and dozens of deadly suicide attacks on security forces in recent months. Pakistan's new coalition government, led by Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party has promised to deal with rising Islamic militancy through dialogue and development. Critics, including U.S. military commanders say Pakistan's previous peace deals with militants in its tribal regions only helped al-Qaida and Taliban extremists to re-group and intensify their attacks in Afghanistan. A top military commander of the international forces told reporters in Kabul the country could see higher levels of violence this year, with many Taliban attacks in eastern Afghanistan originating from across the Pakistani border. Earlier this week, Pakistani authorities released Maulana Sufi Mohammad, the head of an outlawed Islamic group that illegally sent thousands of its followers to fight alongside the Taliban against the U.S-led coalition forces in Afghanistan. 200804/36564

Glenn is head of the foreign policy program at the German Marshall Fund of the ed States. He says President Bush has made a concerted effort since his re-election in 2004 to move beyond differences with Europe over Iraq."And so we kind of set aside Iraq off the trans-Atlantic agenda as a way to look at these other issues because there is certainly enough to be done and enough pressure on both the ed States and Europe," said Glenn. After the summit talks with E.U. leaders, President Bush will head to Germany where he will mark the 60th anniversary of the implementation of the Marshall Plan and the Berlin airlift. McCain, Obama Debate Economic Recovery麦凯恩与奥巴马激辩经济复苏政策 Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain and Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama battled over economic recovery policies during the second presidential debate ahead of the November election. For 90 minutes, Senator McCain and Senator Obama responded to questions from a group of undecided voters at Belmont University in Nashville. The so called "town hall" forum gave voters a chance to voice their concerns and ask the U.S. presidential candidates about the specific policies and positions they would bring to the White House, if elected in November. The debate was moderated by journalist Tom Brokaw, who helped select the questions from voters in the audience and voters on the Internet. Many of the questions focused on how the candidates would respond to the current economic crisis and combat rising unemployment and falling home prices. Senator Obama said one of his first priorities would be to address financial problems in key banks and insurance companies, as well as problems facing average Americans. The middle class need a rescue package. That means tax cuts for the middle class. That means help for home owners, so they can stay in their homes," he said. Senator McCain said falling real estate prices are affecting many Americans, and he proposed a government program to buy up bad home loans to boost the market. We all know, friends, until we stabilize home values in America, we are never going to start turning around and creating jobs and fixing our economy. We have to give some trust and confidence back to America," McCain said. Both candidates cited the toll that rising energy prices have had on the economy, and stressed the need for alternatives to foreign oil. McCain said a crucial part of stimulating the economy is reducing the nation's dependence on foreign oil supplies. "Drilling offshore and [building] nuclear power [plants] are two vital elements of that. I have been supporting those, and I know how to fix this economy and eliminate our dependence on foreign oil and stop sending 0 billion a year overseas," he said. Senator Obama said he would try to stimulate new technologies and energy solutions in the ed States to eliminate the need for foreign oil. "That is why I have called for an investment of billion a year over 10 years. Our goal should be in 10 years we are free of Middle Eastern oil. And we can do it," he said. Obama defended against claims by McCain that he would raise taxes in order to pay for new government programs. He stressed that most Americans will see taxes go down if he is elected president. I want to provide a tax cut for 95 percent of Americans. If you make less than a quarter million dollars a year, you will not see a single dime of your taxes go up," Obama said. Obama criticized McCain for a proposal to freeze government spending, saying it would hurt many social programs. But McCain said a tough spending limit is needed to get the economy back under control. "We will have to have an across the board freeze. Some of those programs may not grow as much as we would like them to. But we can establish priorities with full transparency," McCain said. Both candidates agreed that fixing the current economic crisis is vital to addressing other concerns about the future of social security and other government programs in the future. The latest opinion polls show Senator Obama is leading Senator McCain as the candidates enter the final month of campaigning before the vote on November 4. A: Good morning Mr. Liu. Neil: And talk about in the toilet what if I told you that American-made vehicles are so yesterday, my next guest plans to be the first to import and sell Chinese cars in North America and predicts that within 5 years Americans will be buying one million Chinese-made cars from his dealers. With us now is Malcolm Bricklin. He is the founder and CEO of Visionary Vehicles. Neil: Really?Malcolm Bricklin: Really Neil. Neil: What's doing it? Malcolm Bricklin: What's do it is that they decided to come into the automobile business and when the Chinese society wanna go into a market, what they do is study, all the case study is who are the best people, and they picked Toyota and Lexus, so they said we wanna copy them, except we wanna sell more than both of them. Neil: Yeah, but there is always a learning curve right? (Yeah. )When the first Japanese cars came into this country, they were crap, you know, the first Korean cars that came into this country, they were junk too. And then, you know they got better. Obviously, much better. Who would want to be the American to be the first to buy these Chinese cars? Malcolm Bricklin: Well, the Japanese cars when they came in with Toyota and Datsun first, they had a recover, and do something better, when I came in with Subaru in 1968, they were there from the day Subaru came in, they were top-quality and they remain top quality. What you need to do to have top quality is to get great designers, get great equipment , put a lot of money into the thing and have the determination to do it. Neil: And it's going to be cheap, right, much cheaper than the promoter. . . . . Malcolm Bricklin: Well, we're going to go with cars Like BMW or Mercedes, and be 30, 40% cheaper than them. Neil: All right, but I tell you a BMW and Mercedes buyer isn't going to buy a Chinese car. Malcolm Bricklin: I agree 100 percent. We are not after them. (Yeah. ) We want to build a car that would be equal to in everyway, shape or form, except it, and feels rich and sell to people who can afford to buy TOYOTAs and NISSIANs and Hondas.Neil: Are they gonna want it? Malcolm Bricklin: Well, we think they are going to, because they are designed by Pininfarina and Bertone, engines by AVL and interiors that are gonna be knocked out. So, we are going to take all the advantages. . . Neil: Usually, when you are combining those types of people all together.Malcolm Bricklin: Yeah Neil: It's a disaster. Yeah, it could be, it could be, but then once again, they all the history, they had all the benefits to see what was wrong and what was good(Yeah), and they are picking the good and they are listening, big time.Neil: But would you as a consumer, you are a very smart businessman, but would you as a consumer buy the first off the lot? Malcolm Bricklin: Well, somebody just did a study in Automotive News , I just yesterday as a matter, Ed Laphen, I believe is the one who did it. and he said that they polled people from Asian models and they asked if they would buy Chinese cars, if they thought they would be of the same quality and 51% said yes. Neil: But now the issue would be price, so the only thing that compelled the Americans thrilled to buy Japanese cars is by comparison they were so cheap, (Absolutely) even when the quality was shoddy. And now we know in retrospect this quality quickly caught up and then surpassed the American car makers. The same with Hyundai , I guess in Korea when they were originally they were junk . They have gotta extremely much better. Arh, who wants to wait through a learning curve with Chinese cars? Malcolm Bricklin: Then I don't think they're gonna have to, the learning curve they have been doing is less 5 years, they have been learning how to really build good cars(Yeah), and now they bring in the very best of the best with us and others from around the world. Neil: So you are an American manufacturer , what's gone through your head? Malcolm Bricklin: It's gonna be a problem, but the American manufacturers have more problems just than the Chinese, because they have porblems now and the Chinese aren't here. Neil: And Chinese are cheap labor, right? Malcolm Bricklin: Yeah, absolutely, it's going to be a very very serious realignment of the way the world is. Neil: All right, all right, Malcolm Bricklin. Thank you very much with Visionary Vehicles he is the founder and CEO.200807/44823President Bush presided at a White House ceremony Monday honoring women around the world who are fighting for freedom. March is women's history month in the ed States. And the president recognized not only those who have made a difference in the past, but those who are changing lives today. We take pride in the progress women have made here at home and we know that millions of women abroad are still working to secure their basic rights," said President Bush. He made specific mention of women who are playing a key role in emerging democracies, such as Afghanistan and Iraq. And he pointed to Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as an example of just how much an empowered woman can do to bring a country on the brink of collapse to a hopeful future. Liberians call President Johnson 'the iron lady' and 'Ma', said Mr. Bush. "I am proud to call her 'friend.'" Mr. Bush also spoke of the women who take on tyrants in an effort to bring freedom to their countries. He told the stories of activists in Cuba and Belarus. And he pledged America's ongoing commitment to the Democracy movement in Burma led by Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Aung San Suu Kyi has never wavered," he said. "Her courage and her writings have inspired millions. And in so doing, they have put fear into the hearts of the leaders of the Burmese junta." Among those attending the event at the White House were women who hold key posts in the president's cabinet, serve in Congress, and represent their countries as ambassadors in Washington. 200803/30143Boylan interviews the girls separately, probing their memory for clues. She does not interrogate them, but engages them in casual conversation. Her questions are always indirect. I divert them throughout the interview and then periodically interject questions about the shapes and about textures and the information and the answers are usually there because they're not dwelling and they're not second-guessing themselves. Another one of Boylan's secret tactics is to encourage the girls to use Play-Doh to help recall their memories of the suspect's face. What that does is it gives her a physical anchor in the moment so that she's not again revisiting that crime. It's a simple little tool, but it's very effective. So I would say, if you were going to create that kind of a shape, would you create a shape that's longer than wide or the same length as width? And if I ask that question, even in my voice tone if I say longer than wide or the same length as width, you will understand that that voice tone is dedeha, dedeha because if I even wave my voice tone, more heavily went into the sentence than the other I can lead someone that has been through trauma. After interviewing the girls, Boylan draws a depiction that is much more detailed than the police composite. In fact, the suspect in Boylan's portrait has a beard. There were some very distinctive characteristics in, in the suspect's face. There was an indentation on one side of the face, and not the other, and there was a furrow in the brow, there were wrinkles in the forehead. All these single individual traits that made this, this single face identifiable supposed to be in generic gave me a pretty high level of confidence that we had a good rendition. Looking at Jeanne's portrait for the first time, set something off, I think, deep inside everybody that looked at it. That finally, we have a face, that finally there are, are real sets of features that go together and underlie some kind of a personality. When Jeanne Boylan's new drawing is presented to the press, she is questioned about one glaring omission. I got this barrage of questions by the press saying, you know, what about the headband? My initial reaction was like, oh, my god, I forgot the headband, but the reality was there was no headband, it didn't surface in either interview. What that was, was a perfect example of the power of suggestion. The two little girls were shown a selection of headgear, which implies that such an item exists. If I said to you, there's an older expression "Don't think of the pink elephant", and when I said that to you, what do you think of?Boylan's new drawing gives investigators renewed hope and the search for Polly goes into a high gear. For the first time, we knew more or less what we were looking for and I think that it instilled us a sense of, of purpose, or re-instilled the sense of purpose to all of the various players involved who at that time tended to be the, the law enforcement, the media and, and certainly the, the massive volunteer effort as well. There will be probably tomorrow between 200 and 300 search and rescue personnel here to assist us.Play-Doh is a commercial modeling compound similar in texture to b dough that has been sold as a children's toy around the world for a half centuryindentation: a deep recess or notch on the edge or surface of something200810/51251

There were two anti-US firebrands, Iran and Venezuela who are making the most noise, and they were saying that the weaker US dollar is to blame for the record high oil prices. Currently oil export earnings are denominated in US dollars. And that's one of the reasons why we have Saudi Arabia as well as the UAE, pegging their currency to the greenback. Now what people are saying is that Venezuela as well as Iran were pushing for the OPEC oil cartel to move instead to a basket of currencies away from the US dollar a lot of analysts are saying that that would probably be impossible for the OPEC, for OPEC to really do. Especially because Saudi Arabia was caught on close-circuit TV, saying that they should stop talking about the US dollar altogether because there were concern , the country was concerned that the US dollar would continue to weaken further. Interesting, OPEC taking inspiration from Gesal , Bernsham, perhaps Jay-Z, who has been caught flushing euros in this latest rob . Now what else came out of the meeting? well, what really came out of the meeting is that OPEC's just clearly divided over their opinion on the US dollar on their stance towards the ed States as well as on whether or not OPEC really should increase production or not . Now what people were saying was that really OPEC, you know, on the one hand, you have Venezuela who was talking up the oil prices by basically saying that oil could hit two hundred dollars a barrel. If the US were to strike Iraq, sorry, strike Iran, or to strike Venezuela, now then on the other hand, you have Saudi Arabia which of course, was, is really a long time ally of the ed States and is trying to move the conversation away from politics and more towards environmental concerns.Notes:The Greenback: A note of U.S. currency.200807/43588Plus, have you seen the way she dresses? Im not happy and I think youve got to take some action. Anna, youre on fire! But stick to the facts, dont get personal about Rachel. Well Im sure Mr Socrates would disagree with you. Look, if she is as bad as you say then Ill give you my permission to discipline her – give her a warning. What!
