In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.;库克在信中说:“我们希望向用户提供更好的地图务,包括按方向导航、语音和俯瞰视图(Flyover)功能,并引入矢量地图数据。 Although iOS 6 was only released formally on 19 September, Cook says there are now more than 100m devices using it with the new Apple Maps, ;with more and more joining us every day.; He said that users ;have aly searched for nearly half a billion locations; and that such feedback will improve the quality. Unusually, Cook recommends that users who are dissatisfied with Apple#39;s offering should try rival services. These include apps by MapQuest, Waze and Microsoft#39;s Bing, or maps from Google and Nokia via web browsers. However, Google#39;s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, indicated earlier this week that the search giant is not presently developing an app for iOS. #39;#39;What were we going to do, force (Apple) to include the software?; Schmidt said in Tokyo on Monday, adding that Google has no plans at present to complete its iOS Google Maps app and submit it to Apple. That decision lies with Apple, Schmidt said.“我们应该做的难道是迫使苹果兼容我们的软件吗?” #39;#39;We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know?; he added.“我们认为如果苹果运用我们的软件这将会更好。 Barely 10 days old, Stephen Elop’s “Hello there” memo has aly become a classic example of how not to fire people. It is a 1,110-word document stiff with “appropriate financial envelopes”, “ramp-downs” and “ecosystems” which, towards the end, casually mentions that thousands of Microsoft jobs are to go. Rather than dish out the bad news directly, the executive vice-president takes refuge behind a curious subjunctive: “We plan that this would result in an estimated reduction of 12,500#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;employees.” Yet to focus on Mr Elop’s tin ear misses something. This memo deserves to become a set text for all executives interested in communication. It adds value by showcasing the delivery of business piffle that is perfectly aligned with current high-end management guff. It is a case study in how not to write, how not to think, and how not to lead a business. The only trouble with the text is that it is almost impossible to . It took me several attempts to get to the end, but having now made it, I feel I ought to perform the public service of passing on eight golden rules that occurred to me while slogging my way through. Rule 1. Never be chatty unless you are a chatty sort of person. “Hello there,” is fine from a grandparent trying to jolly along a five-year-old. It is less good spoken by a corporate leader to his ranks, especially when the jocularity begins and ends there. Rule 2. Using clear words is nearly always a good idea – except when you don’t have anything clear to say. The memo begins: “Microsoft’s strategy is focused on productivity and our desire to help people ‘do more’.” This is attractively simple (if you ignore the baffling inverted commas), but is less attractively stupid. Do more what? There are things I’d like to do more of, like sleep, and other things I’d like to do less of, like nagging my children. Rule 3. The word “align” serves as a warning that the sentence in which it appears is a dud. Mr Elop performs no fewer than six acts of alignment in this memo, each more heroic than the last. In none of them is it clear exactly what he is lining up, nor why it matters that such things should be in a line at all. “To align with Microsoft’s strategy, we plan to focus our efforts,” he starts with unhelpful circularity. He assures us that there will be a lot more aligning: “We will focus on delivering great breakthrough products in alignment with major milestones ahead,” thus craftily slipping in five other weasel words. In rising order of obnoxiousness, these are: focus, major, milestone, breakthrough and delivering. 按可憎程度的升序排列,这五个词分别是:focus(专注)、major(重大)、milestone(里程碑)、breakthrough(突破)和deliver(交付)。But it is only with Mr Elop’s final act of alignment that we see the point of it. “As difficult as some of our changes are today, this direction deliberately aligns our work with the cross company efforts that Satya has described in his recent emails.” In other words, don’t blame him. Blame the CEO, Satya Nadella, or, better still, blame the need for arranging things in lines. Rule 4. When things are cheap or expensive, say so. Don’t bang on about the “affordable smartphone space” and “high-end” devices. This fools no one, and alienates practically everyone. Rule 5. Avoid the word “experience”. Not only is it the most fashionable of all management buzz words, it is misleading. An experience is something that leaves an impression on you; everyday activities ought to do no such thing, or we would all be exhausted within minutes of waking up. Using your phone, except perhaps when it’s brand new, should not be an experience. I do not want the “device experiences” or even less the “digital life experiences”, that Mr Elop is trying to “showcase” to his customers. Rule 6. The more often an executive uses the word “strategy”, the more you fear he lacks a good one. To use it once is just about acceptable. To use it seven times, as Mr Elop does, is very worrying indeed. Rule 7. Never use a trinity of abstract nouns. It shows you know what you are saying is inadequate. “Collectively,” the memo ends, “the clarity, focus and alignment across the company, and the opportunity to deliver the results of that work into the hands of people, will allow us to increase our success in the future. Regards, Stephen.” It won’t, Stephen. Collectively, a trinity of almost identical, empty mass nouns and the opportunity to deliver something that is not specified is not going to increase anything. Except possibly the dismay, disdain and distrust of the people who work for you. And just as a bonus, here is rule number eight. Don’t end a memo with “regards”. /201408/323013Here#39;s what Apple told investors about its business Tuesday: Margins, revenues, and profits in the next quarter all will be worse than investors had expected. Here#39;s what Apple didn#39;t address Wednesday: Specific plans for any new product categories or personnel moves, either among its long-serving management team or to fill at least one long-vacant hole. The stock rallied in after-hours trading. Oh yeah, one more thing: Apple (AAPL) said it will dramatically increase its dividend, its share buybacks, and, for the first time, that it will borrow significant amounts of money to fuel this return of capital to shareholders. Apple actually bragged on its earnings call with investors that it will be one of the biggest payers of dividends in the world. 派息?There#39;s more. Tim Cook, the man with the most unenviable task in the history of business, that of following Steve Jobs, said Apple planned to release ;great; new products in the ;fall and throughout 2014,; and, eventually, new categories. The fall· If true, meaning that if Apple#39;s big meeting with developers in June is a ho-hum event from a new-product perspective, then Apple will have gone a year without new product introductions. New products at Apple is the only thing that matters. Margins are eroding because new products cannibalize older products. The success of the iPad Mini is a financial penalty for Apple: It#39;s a less profitable product than its bigger cousin. But that is beside the point. Apple said a significant number of iPad Mini buyers are first-time iPad buyers, and this is what is important, adding new Apple customers to its lists of people to market the next great products -- whatever their configuration. Remember, Apple has done this before. iPod Shuffle customers spent less than they did on iPods. They also had to have an iPhone when it came out. In some ways, Apple sounds delusional when it talks about itself. Asked, as he has been many times before, for his take on the trend to pack bigger screens into smartphones, Tim Cook said he thinks Apple#39;s iPhone 5 has the best screen in existence and that big screens aren#39;t for everyone. He#39;ll keep saying that until Apple offers a phone with a bigger screen. And we#39;ll see how that sounds when we witness customer reactions to the new Samsung Galaxy S4, a product whose media blitz has just begun. In other ways, Apple shows that it is very much in tune with reality. Cook knows keeping 5 billion lying around is too much. So he#39;ll give more back to shareholders. He knows that with interest rates as low as they are it makes no sense for a company with Apple#39;s balance sheet not to borrow money and share the benefits with shareholders. So he#39;s taking on debt -- Steve Jobs#39;s aversion to the stuff be damned. The world stops and listens when Apple talks. The problem is that Apple doesn#39;t always have something to say, and Tuesday was one of those days. It would be foolish to assume Apple isn#39;t ever going to have anything to say again. But the pressure certainly is building.

Even the unflappable Francis Underwood perspires in ultra high definition. Yes, I spotted sweat on the upper lip of Kevin Spacey#39;s fictitious vice president while streaming Netflix#39;s #39;House of Cards#39; on a new 65-inch Ultra HD television from Samsung. It#39;s the kind of discovery you can make with a technology that#39;s pushing for the mainstream this year: televisions that have four times as many pixels as the industry-standard high definition. That#39;s more pixels than some cinema projectors, packed in so tight they just melt away. Ultra HD (sometimes called #39;4K#39;) televisions have been around for more than a year, but until now held limited appeal. Prices were stratospheric, making it hard to justify a bump in clarity. Now Ultra HD prices are flying closer to Earth: Brand-name sets start below ,500, and ,000 will get you Samsung#39;s top 65-inch curved-screen HU9000, which I tested this week. If you#39;re the kind of connoisseur who wants to be first to see Mr. Spacey sweat, it finally makes sense to make the leap to an Ultra HD television. The arrival of the new Ultra HD sets is part of a home-theater renaissance that#39;s making the tube cool again and making me consider an upgrade. But to enjoy the full benefits of UHD, you#39;ll need a fast broadband connection, and possibly a couch that#39;s much closer to your TV. The biggest reason to finally give Ultra HD a look has to do with content. Previously, there was very little made-for-UHD , and -- even worse -- no good way to deliver its giant files to homes. Though there#39;s still no TV programming broadcast in UHD -- and none on the way, for the time being -- the equation changes this spring when Samsung, Sony, LG and Vizio couple their Ultra HD TVs with streamed content from the Internet: UHD programs like #39;House of Cards#39; from Netflix, with more shows and films on the way from Amazon.com, M-Go and Comcast. So here#39;s the ,000 question: What can you really see with Ultra HD? On the Samsung HU9000, I experienced a qualitatively better image both with UHD content and regular Blu-ray HD content that the TV #39;upscaled#39; to Ultra HD. That said, it isn#39;t the kind of transformative experience you had the first time you saw a sporting event in regular HD. What you do get with Ultra HD is a sense of detail that sneaks up on you, especially on wide shots. For example, an overhead scene at the beginning of the film #39;World War Z#39; looks like ant-sized people are scrambling around on my HDTV. But in Ultra HD, you can see, in horrifying detail, those poor souls being tackled by zombies. With that kind of resolution, sitting closer to the screen makes you feel much more like you#39;re in on the action. In fact, some argue you must sit closer -- or buy a larger TV -- for the eye to benefit from the extra resolution. You#39;ll likely want to rearrange the furniture. For the 65-inch set I tested, I scooted my couch up until it was just 6 feet away. Get too close, though, and you#39;ll start to get the same dizzying feeling you get in the front row of a movie theater. The curved screen, a feature I was skeptical about, was actually pretty nice for creating an immersive experience, especially with a close-up couch. Probably its key benefit, however, was minimizing glare during daylight hours. It adds about ,000 onto the price of a basic Ultra HD set. Samsung makes fantastic screens, but the rest of the package is mixed. The sound built into the HU9000 model I tested was anemic, but presumably anybody buying such a big TV would have a sound system. Samsung#39;s #39;SmartTV#39; interface has been improved for switching between live TV and streaming, but still isn#39;t as simple as set-top boxes like the TiVo Roamio. It#39;s true, televisions historically haven#39;t been a great technology for early adopters. Battles over standards and formats have left many in the lurch. Samsung put the TV#39;s brains in an external box that can be easily upgraded. This promises to considerably extend the life of a TV you buy today, if you#39;re willing to shell out 0 or so for next year#39;s #39;evolution kit.#39;没错,从以往来看,电视对尝鲜者来说一直不是一项伟大的技术。 Netflix, the first premium service to deliver UHD over the Internet, has accomplished an impressive feat in making it work over broadband (at no additional cost to subscribers). Some early testers report image quality problems in darker patches, but #39;House of Cards#39; looked fine to me. And Netflix#39;s chief product officer Neil Hunt told me the quality shouldn#39;t suffer as more people get Ultra HD TVs and all try to stream at the same time. It won#39;t work for everyone because Netflix requires broadband speed of at least 16 megabits to sustain the Ultra HD connection. That may be easy for cable connections like my Comcast hookup in San Francisco, but it#39;s good to find out your own carrier#39;s top speed. As for Netflix#39;s competition, it#39;s not yet clear how much Amazon and M-Go will charge for Ultra HD streaming, or how well they#39;ll work. (Those services weren#39;t y during my test, and Samsung#39;s TV software can#39;t yet play the Ultra HD content now available on YouTube.) Netflix will push UHD because it wants its streaming technology to leapfrog physical media and traditional broadcasters. But expect Hollywood#39;s own UHD content to arrive in a trickle, rather than a tsunami. Most movies and shows today still aren#39;t shot with cameras that record in UHD. While that#39;s changing -- and film tends to be greater resolution than typical high-def -- some directors still prefer the look of shots taken with older cameras. Today, there aren#39;t even any UHD games or major sports coverage. To supplement the streams from Netflix and others, Samsung is selling a 9 add-on device loaded with five Ultra HD movies. Sony has one for 0 with 50 movies. Either way, these feel like extras they should throw in free, like floor mats in a new car. Some TV technologies like 3-D have turned out to be gimmicks. But Ultra HD is different because it shifts our perception fundamentally, from the pixels to the pictures. That#39;s why, despite today#39;s challenges, Ultra HD is inevitable on the largest screens in our homes. It#39;s better for movie nights and for displaying text and other information. You just have to decide when you want to make the leap.3D等一些TV电视技术最后变成了噱头。 My iPad is with me every night when I doze off to sleep, it entertains me on long flights and keeps me informed during my morning commute. The iPad doesn#39;t cut it. Now, though, there are tablets that are literally standing up to the productivity challenge. Samsung#39;s Galaxy Note Pro tablets are just hitting shelves, including a 9 model with a 12.2-inch screen and optional keyboard dock. Then there are Microsoft#39;s Surface tablets, which are heavily promoted as the #39;most productive tablets.#39;如果我在写一封长长的电子邮件或在使用office文档,那么我就需要更大的屏幕、宽大的键盘以及在多项程序中切换的能力。 But are any really as good as a laptop? To find out, I hid my MacBook Air under the bed and replaced it with four tablets paired with keyboard covers. In addition to the Android-powered Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, I borrowed two Windows 8.1 tablets, the Surface Pro 2 and Nokia#39;s Lumia 2520. Microsoft has two tablet operating systems -- one for heavy computing and one for lighter work -- so I wanted to try both flavors. I didn#39;t want to ignore the most popular tablet, so I paired an iPad Air with Logitech#39;s Ultrathin Bluetooth keyboard cover. I concentrated on the four aspects where my laptop continues to beat tablets: multitasking, text input, business-app selection and that delicate balance of speed and battery life. I mostly toggle between email, a Web browser, a word processor, Skype and a Twitter app. My software needs may be tablet friendly, but I rely on keyboard commands, trackpad gestures and other shortcuts to maximize my multitasking. When it came to moving between programs, the Galaxy Note Pro had some good tricks. I arranged up to four apps on the large high-resolution display (though two fit best), and switched between full-screen apps by using the Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut. It sure beat using the iPad, which displays one app at a time and requires you to press the home button twice to switch apps. The Logitech keyboard and its shortcuts didn#39;t help much. But it was the Windows tablets that let me multitask the fastest, locking apps side by side, or quickly toggling between them with keystrokes. Unlike the 9 Nokia, the 9 Surface Pro 2 has a #39;full#39; version of Windows 8.1 -- with wider support for Windows software and greater use of the traditional desktop. I set up the tablet with my preferred classic Windows layout and could plug in a full-size keyboard and mouse, and up to four HD displays. That#39;s important since the classic interface isn#39;t optimized for a 10.6-inch screen. There was a tie for best keyboard. I was able to type 82 words a minute on the Surface Pro Type cover and the Galaxy Note Pro#39;s keyboard cover, slightly down from my usual 92 words a minute. The Samsung keyboard was the closest in size to my laptop#39;s, though my fingers felt most at home on the Surface#39;s firm, backlit keys. (Both tablets also come with a stylus, which proved useful during meetings, converting my handwriting into text.) I typed 80 words a minute on the Nokia keyboard case, and 72 on the iPad#39;s Logitech cover. All of these let me type faster than on a screen. The keyboard cases did share one problem: They don#39;t sit on laps very well. They all at some point did an Olympic-style dive off my legs. Each tablet except the Surface Pro comes with productivity software. Samsung provides third-party apps that look like exact copies of Word, PowerPoint and Excel. The iPad includes Apple#39;s Pages, Keynote and Numbers. If you want the real deal, Microsoft Office comes preloaded on the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet. (With the Surface Pro, you have to buy Office separately.) The app selection gets more dicey when it comes to job-specific software or accessing a company network. There are now iPad and even Android versions of business software, but you have to check first. If your work relies on specialized software that hasn#39;t been updated in a while, stick with the Surface Pro. Speed and Battery Life速度与电池寿命I expected the tablets to need Red Bull to keep up with my daily routine, including having 10 or more websites open at once, yet they held their own. That said, the Galaxy Note Pro was occasionally slow to launch and switch apps. The Surface Pro, with its Intel Core i5 laptop-class processor, was the peppiest. But the Surface Pro#39;s power comes with a big sacrifice in battery life, not to mention size. The half-inch-wide, 2-lb. Surface was out of juice after 5.5 hours, while the thinner iPad and Galaxy Note Pro streamed for over nine hours, and the Lumia chugged along for nearly eight. While the Galaxy Note Pro fared admirably, the Surface Pro did the best in multitasking, text input and software compatibility. Still, I wouldn#39;t prefer it over my MacBook Air, or any 13-inch Windows laptop. And as a tablet, it falls behind most competitors. The more useful for work these devices become, the further they get from being really good tablets, which means it might take awhile before that perfect all-in-one device arrives. Until then, you#39;ll find a tablet on my nightstand -- and a laptop in my lap.
