Officials say there will be even greater vigilance for the Beijing Olympics in August. Last year, Chinese authorities confiscated over 110 million pirated products - books, magazines, movies, music and software. Chinese officials Thursday said this is a result of a new intellectual property rights strategy that began last year. Yin Xintian, spokesman for the State Intellectual Property Office, says authorities will be even stricter this year, especially with Olympic merchandise. In order to make sure that the 2008 games are a great success China has improved the legal framework for IPR related to the Olympic Games," he said. Yin dismissed the idea that even with increasing arrests and confiscations, the problem may be growing faster than government oversight. At the same time, officials acknowledge it is difficult to educate the public about copyright protection. Shu Chao, deputy director general of the National Copyright Administration, says China needs more time. To be short, we only have a road map, we don't have a specific timeframe," Shu said. "That's to say we do have a goal as to completing how many enterprises." Companies around the world complain that open piracy of their copyrighted goods goes on daily in China, as well as in much of the rest of Asia. Illegal copies of Western movies, books and fashions are sold in markets all over China. U.S. entertainment and software companies say they lose billions of dollars in sales each year in China because of piracy. In one example, authorities in the ed States are investigating a counterfeit operation they think has links to China, after they discovered million worth of fake name brand products in New York and New Jersey. Thursday, Chinese officials asked the international community to be patient. Besides the confiscating illegal products, they say, judicial protection of intellectual property rights is improving, patent applications are increasing and international cooperation is expanding. 200804/35469Now China's sizzling(red-hot) economy is growing at its fastest rate in a decade. This year 5 million young people will graduate from the country's universities, with the potential to boost China's economy still further. But the government estimates that 1 million of them won't find jobs because the education system isn't supplying the needs of an economy still based on manufacturing. Our Beijing correspondent Lindsey Hilsum went along to a graduate job fair.Too many students, not enough jobs. In the last 7 years the number of / graduates has quadrupled in Beijing alone. No wonder the job fair is a bit overwhelming.I think there are so many people, and the crowd, at very beginning, I even wanna get out, you know, because I think I've been here before, but I have never seen so many people here. This is one of dozens of job fairs being held in the capital now.Huo jianguo calls himself Mike. He is looking for a job in sales, even though his degree is in electronic information. The requirements (are) spelt out, men must be tall, women, good looking, but Mike has his own hurdles. In China, selling involves a lot of serious drinking with clients. "I can drink a little" he says when asked ," 3 or 4 beers". "I don't care how much beer you can drink" she replies, "I'm talking about hard liquor". Oh dear, Mike says he can't take that much.In the afternoon, Mike goes for a job with a mobile phone distributor. This is the third round of interviews. I think Mike has got a good chance. He has been to a reputable university and he speaks English, which is a big plus. But not many of the 5 million Chinese students who are going to graduate in the next few months have got those advantages. The Chinese economy is out of kilter with the education system. There just aren't enough jobs being created for that many people with degrees.Mike's parents live in a flat in Tianjin, 2 hours' drive from Beijing. He is the only child in line with government policy. The insecurity of modern China baffles them. In their day, everyone was assigned a job for life by the state, or used to be called the iron rice bowl. In our time, we had no dreams. We all belonged to one state-owned work unit. There were no choices, no flexibility.Mike shows me the market by his parents' flat. He says his dream is to run his own company, the job search is just start. "For the younger people we'd better have hope in life, and have our own dreams, if not, life's just meaningless, you know. Yeah! This is the new China where everyone dares to dream. But reality is harsh, and there is no safety net for those who fall.Lindsey Hilsum, Channel 4 News, Beijing.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1.out of kilter: adj. phr., informal Not balanced right

Here we go again.4 years of waiting are over, as the first of 64 matches that make up this tournament gets underway. 161 goals were scored during the last World Cup. It took the German team just a few minutes to notch up the first of this year's tally, scoring in their match against underdogs--Costa Rica. The organizers are expecting up to a million people to visit Germany for the tournament, as many as 10 percent, that's 100 thousand of them, from Britain alone. We stay in Frankfurt and we are obedient. And waiting for the fans, a familiar sight, British police walking German streets for the first time with their German counterparts. And another familiar face, Hard Man actor Ray Winston. Hey hello, English Cop. From England?Yeah, I am on high, Ah! Levy it, levy it. all right. he's up for the full game.Oh,I did, oh,I've done nothing. At the US team headquarters, there was added security, following a heightened terror threat after the death of Al Zarkawi. So ahead for these fans, 96 hours of televised giant-screen gut-wrenching tension crammed into 3 long weeks, with the hopes and fears of devoted fans from 32 countries around the world now hanging in the balance. More and more engaged couples are going for premarital lessons. Hey, what do you have to lose? They should learn more because maybe they can avoid a divorce. Debra Mandel is the author of "Your Boss is not Your Mother". Oh that's a relief. She's given a lot of couples advice too on how to stay together. How are you, Debra? I'm great. How are you doing?Good. I, I like this, cause I think you can never be too prepared. I'm married a very, very long time and that first year is tough for any couple, so what do you think you can learn if you go for somebody's courses? In, in the Catholic religion, you have to, but for people who wanna do it anyway, what can you learn?Well, I'm always so excited when people come to me, it, for couples' counseling before they've aly tied the knots, so that we can really help them understand a lot of the pitfalls that people get into. For one, people assume that once they're married, everything is gonna be just nice and rosy and you don't have to do anything anymore and not understanding that when that honeymoon period wears off, it could really be devastating for people if they don't have realistic expectations (I hope) about actual marriage. Yep, hoping that it never wears off that honeymoon phase. I thought this was interesting the Journal of Family Psychology says that if couples receive premarital education, they will have a 31% lower chance of divorce, do you believe that?Oh, absolutely, because when people get information, information is very helpful for people, cause too often people think that things are just gonna be magical, you don't have to do anything, but really and truly for having a great relationship, you have to put a lot of time and energy into nurturing the whole concept of a couple, you know, we need to look at ourselves as, now, we are two people joining together and every decision we make is going to affect our partner, so we need to be really aware of everything about our person that we're gonna be with. (And that's one of the...) in advance. One of the tips that you have, the other ones I saw, assess the quality of communications. Obviously, communication is key and I thought this one was great too, Debra, one of your tips. Understand your partner's family dynamics. Is this (yeah) what they say you actually marry his mother or vice versa, I guess?Yes, as, as a matter of fact, what we need to understand is whenever we're marrying a partner, we are marrying their entire family, because they have had relationships with their family all the way since they were born and so those people are usually going to have an impact on how your partner behaves and thinks and their ideas and their values. You need to be comfortable with your partner's family and if you are not comfortable with certain members of that family, you need to make peace with that and talk that through and that's why communication is so important cause people need to be able to understand their differences, to communicate with empathy, with compassion for each other and really be able to listen to each other and not talk over each other. Debra Mandel, author of "Your Boss is not Your Mother". Great advice. Thanks so much.Thank you so much. (That's so easy, just do whatever your like at once )Sounds easy.

A five-to-four majority of the court ruled that individual citizens have the right to own firearms, and in the process it struck down a 32-year-old ban on handguns in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Writing for the five-member court majority, Justice Antonin Scalia said the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution does protect the rights of individuals to own firearms for personal use. Legal scholars have long debated whether the Second Amendment guaranteed the right of individuals to possess firearms, or if it merely applied to state militias. Attorney Alan Gura says the high court's historic ruling makes it clear that individuals do have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Gura represented a Washington, D.C. resident who wanted the city's 32-year-old ban on handguns struck down. People do have an individual right to keep and bear arms, that is very important to remember. That means that the government cannot ban handguns, it cannot regulate guns out of existence. We feel today is a fantastic day for liberty once again," Gura said. Gura represented security guard Dick Heller. Heller lives in a high-crime section of Washington and challenged the city's handgun ban so he could defend himself. I am very pleased to have been able to take this case, with help from my attorneys, all the way to the highest court in the land. And I am very happy that now I am able to defend myself and my household in my own home," Heller said. Among those welcoming the high court's decision was President Bush. The White House issued a statement saying the president strongly agrees with the court's majority opinion.Republican presidential candidate John McCain also praised the decision as a landmark victory for freedom in the ed States.Democratic candidate Barack Obama issued a statement that said the court decision will provide guidance to local communities trying to balance the rights of gun owners with the need to protect citizens in high crime areas of the country. The four Supreme Court justices in the minority who wanted to uphold the handgun ban argued that striking down the Washington, D.C. law would open up other gun control statutes to constitutional challenges. Gun control advocates were disappointed but not surprised by the Supreme Court ruling. We are obviously disappointed and disagree with the majority opinion. This takes off the idea that you can have a near total ban on guns, especially guns for self-defense,' said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence. But Helmke noted that in his majority opinion, Justice Scalia said that although the court recognizes an individual right to bear arms, that right is not unlimited. It is clear that what the court did today was that they limited the extremes. They said that you can no longer have near total prohibitions on guns, but they also said you can have reasonable restrictions on guns," he said. In his opinion, Scalia said the ruling should not be used to cast doubt on existing gun control laws that keep guns out of the hands of convicted criminals and the mentally ill, and prevent weapons from being carried into schools and government buildings. Gura says Thursday's Supreme Court decision will have far-reaching legal ramifications for government attempts to enact new gun control measures. "We are not going to see the end of instant background checks. We are not going to see the end of the ban on felons or lunatics having guns. But, when the government regulates guns, it has to remember that it is potentially stepping on an important individual right and it is going to be made to respect that right," he saidThe high court last took up the issue of the Second Amendment and gun ownership in 1939, but legal scholars say the court at that time did not directly settle the question of whether individual citizens have a right to bear arms.
